Who to use as a reference for adoption ?

I'm after a bit of advice please.
I am in a single sex relationship and my DW gave birth to our DS in February. I am going through the process of adopting him, and as part of this, I need to give details of two referees.
The problem being, I only moved to Scotland a few years ago from 'Englandshire' so I don't have any 'long term' friends in the area.
Would it be better for me to ask people who have known me for years (but would not be able to come for any face to face chats with social services) or someone who hasn't known me for very long, but is local ?
I'd appreciate any thoughts / comments of people who have been in a similar position.

If you need two why not have one local and one from your long term friends?

when my brother adopted, he gave his old friend as a reference even though they didn't live in the same town anymore. The social worker came to interview the referee in his house and visited me, my sister and my parents while she was here.

Shouldn't be a problem - they don't have to live locally
