How do you trace a birth parent?

My DH has never known his biological father as he left his Mum when DH was a baby. His Mum remarried and DH was not adopted as his birth father wouldn't agree to it but his surname was changed by deedpoll. We know his name as it is on the birth certificate but we do not know anymore information as DH's Mum will not discuss the situation (the only time it was mentioned was when they told him when he was 14 that his Dad wasn't his biological Dad and it has never been talked about since and he is now 31!!)
DH is considering looking into tracing his father but we don't know where to start so any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Just read the info on that link (as I was interested in it if I could use it) and it says that where parents were not married or where adoption has taken place they don't do the searches.

I think it's just for where you have lost touch with some long lost distant relative.

but OP implies that they were married ( she says that his mum remarried) and also states that her Dh was NOT adopted, so they may be able to help her

Thanks for the link Boys are like dogs it is definately worth a try! Just to confirm that my DH'S Mum was married to his biological Dad and he would not give his permission for his step-dad to adopt him so it sounds like they could help.
