I first found this board when the little one was small and I was really struggling. Over the years people here have been so kind and generous with their advice and expertise, so I hope you don’t mind me being a bit indulgent with a bit of good news

The little one is not so little now (16) and has just been offered a place at college to study the course of her dreams (animals).

Like most of our kids she’s had lots to deal with, school has been tough and ASD, depression and suicidal thoughts have added to that. Getting this college offer is a phenomenal achievement for her. I’m super proud of her and I think she is almost proud of herself. My mum and dad who have both passed away would have been super proud of her too. I can’t share it with them so wanted to share it here because I know you guys will get what a momentous thing this is.

it’s not even about the college offer really, it’s more that it represents the beginning of my lovely DD getting to see that her perseverance pays off and she’s so much more than her difficulties. She’s had the toughest few years and she deserves a bit of good fortune.

Aw thank you @Seahorsesplendour thats very kind.

We celebrated with fried chicken and an impromptu shopping spree!

I hope your stint in the trenches improves soon. I’ve been there more times than I care to remember (and no doubt will be there again!) sending solidarity, you’ve got this 👊

My ADD has done animal care at agricultural college, it has been fab.

There is a BTEC thread on the Further Education board you may like, there are a few animal care parents on there.

Is she hoping to start at Level 3,] or lower?

My DD missed y11, covid and mh, perfect storm, so she has only got to level 2, taking a gentle route through.

We're in Hants btw.

PoppyStellar · 06/02/2026 22:22

Aiming for level 3 but it very much depends on mental health and how the exams go. The college have been great and said she can start at whatever level she needs to. A gentle way through sounds like a great approach. I’m very much of the same opinion, it doesn’t matter how, or how long, it takes to get there.
