Hello. Has anyone’s partner/yourself adopted their step child? My husband is looking to adopt my eldest (her idea) and wondering how it goes. Looked into it of course but it seems everyone’s different. Looking to hear from people who have been through it 🥰 ps. We have full permission from her bio dad. The words were “more than happy for your husband to adopt, are you done? I have my autistic step son to get back to”…. Then a message a few days later for help and advice how to cos he wants to adopt his step son. This was after 10 years no contact. So yeah, best decision 😂🙈 We are in south Lanarkshire, Glasgow. If that helps.

i also co parent another child with my ex and he’s more than happy to speak to them to say what a good man my husband is also.

Start with speaking to the local authority - South Lanarkshire are pretty good (I’ve worked with them before). They’ll allocate a social worker to meet you and your DH and your children. It should be a straightforward assessment, you’ll need a social worker report for court.

I’d then get a solicitor experienced in adoption - I can recommend an excellent one if that helps. The right solicitor will head off any potential issues so the court system goes smoothly, they may appoint a Guardian ad Litem to gather your kids views independently, that’s nothing to worry about they’re there to safeguard your child in the process. Given your daughters age her views will be given weight through the process so they will want to be sure this is her wish.

The right solicitor meant our adoption (not step child) went through at first hearing. It wasn’t cheap but definitely worth it for peace of mind.

Good luck, feel free to PM me if I can help.
