Hello everyone, I need help. We adopted a child from Slovakia, as my husband and I are Slovaks. At the time of adoption, we lived in England, but we traveled to Slovakia. When the child was in our pre-adoptive care, we asked for pre-settled status for our son. We were told that since the adoption is from abroad, we need to register the adoption at the English court, is it a long process since the adoption has already been completed in Slovakia? we have a new birth certificate, our son has our surname, it is already legal and validly ours Is there a fee for adoption registration? what should I look for, who should I contact? i been contacted from child service, they sent them from the home office to help me with this, as they not accepting pre settlement for my son but it's been taking a long time and they don't even know if I need the registration or not, and nobody told me where to go if I want to do it at all, any experience? thank you

Hi @Jazlyn
I think this may be too much of a specialised question for this forum
Can I suggest you try
https://www.coramiac.org.uk/

They deal with international adoptions so may be able to help

Coram IAC: Intercountry Adoption Centre

Coram IAC – Intercountry Adoption Centre is the UK’s only dedicated international adoption agency. We have helped match families with children abroad since 1997.

I think it is unusual to adopt from abroad while living in the UK without going through the UK adoption process. If your Slovak adoption is valid and recognised, you need a Declaration of Recognition from an English family court and if they do not recognise the Slovak adoption, an Adoption Order may be needed, it seems.

I think you might need legal advice from a solicitor who is experienced in intercountry adoption. Have you contacted the family court? What do they say?

hello, we had some sessions that were required for adoption, which lasted a month after being put on the waiting list, we returned to England and when they called us that our son was born, we traveled to Slovakia again, so there was no need to stay in Slovakia for a long time, they always called us and informed us abouth everything , the adoption from Slovakia is legally recognized in England, Slovakia is on the list of recognized adoptions in England

As far as I know, rules and processes are different for people living abroad while adopting (eg. if you had lived in Slovakia at the time of the adoption) and international adoptions while living in the UK. However, best to speak to a solicitor or family courts. Good luck.
