Just wondering if this was standard I have received today a letter from HMRC about the issue of a National Insurance number to my son when he turns 16 and wanting to check their records that surname us correct (DS adopted by us at 4 )

  • the form has put his birth surname after ours .,. I wasnt expecting it and am concerned that they are saying these are their records of his surname - surely it should have been issued in his adopted name ?

My daughters' NI numbers are both in their current (adopted) first and surname. Def not standard.

That will be why they’re checking, complete and return the form in his adopted name. Sometimes records don’t track through all government departments particularly if you’ve not claimed benefits for them (which is often how HMRC pick up changes).
