Calling Scottish Adopters

It’s been reported that Scotland’s People, a government based genealogy website, has published the names of adopted children which can then be linked to their birth families. The information has been taken down now but it seems it may have been up there for a while. The most recent entries included children adopted as recently as 2022.

The Children’s Commisioner has commented on the potential risk to adopted children and an enquiry is ongoing. I’ve written to Scotlands People to ask if my kids names were on there and whether they intend to tell adoptive parents but I though others might want to know.

Adopted children's names were disclosed on Scotland's People website

The details now have been removed from a Scottish genealogy website over safety and privacy fears.

Thanks @Jellycatspyjamas I've done the same as you but I don't suppose it will achieve very much, the damage is potentially done. It makes a mockery of the non-disclosure we have in place which is a concern. Just another thing to worry about.

I saw it and panicked but social work messed up our paperwork and disclosed our address!! Even though the birth family are considered a risk.

did anyone see if before it was taken down?

Jellycatspyjamas · 11/08/2023 10:41

I didn’t, it was a social worker friend who passed it to me - such a nonsense to not think of the risk to children. While most birth families don’t pose a threat, some do and even tracing or getting in contact with adopted children needs careful management and support.

This is the reply I received from Scotland's People. I hope it doesn't take them too long to get back with answers.

I got the same standard response, I’m not holding my breath for anything more substantive any time soon.

I suspect you are right @Jellycatspyjamas and I suppose if it's been seen it's been seen, we can't change that now. It's a worry.

Anyone had a reply from the National Records? I'm appalled by mine but not surprised. Not answered any of my questions and I'm no further forward to knowing if my children were included. I've taken it to my MSP.
