Passport query

Our daughters adoption isn’t currently finalised, she has a passport in her birth name.

We go away in August, by which time she will officially be ours. It doesn’t however give us long enough to get a new passport. Can we continue using her current passport and then apply for a new one due to a name change when we return?

SS didn’t know today (but confirmed they are happy to give us the passport when the order is signed) and the passport advice line didn’t actually know and said we could manually cancel the passport when we wanted, or it would be cancelled when we applied for one under her new name.

As long as you book the ticket in the name on the passport it should be OK. You can then do the change of name later

Just remember to get a letter from ss saying you may take her on holiday. We have done that without problems.

We won’t be able to as by the time we go away she’ll be legally ours.

Have the adoption certificate or something confirming the adoption with you. The issue will be a child travelling with people who don’t share her name and passport control will pick up on it when you come back into the country.

If your adoption certificate isn’t through a notarised letter from your solicitor should be ok. Basically they need to know she belongs to you, ss might also provide written confirmation that the adoption has been finalised but documents are still pending.

Yes, you can continue using her old passport and apply for a new passport when you return from holiday and have all the paperwork required. I did that with my three adopted kids during several trips. You just need a letter from the social worker confirming the adoption. Happy to send you the content of the social worker letters we used in the past if you private message me.

You can still get a letter from SS even if the adoption order had gone through. Just needs to say child named X was adopted by Y and Z, legal stuff working its way through. We travelled that way lots of times.
