Failing to understand why

Our social worker has not been the best help with our adoption journey. We are meant to be going to panel in 6 weeks but she has just rang me telling us that we can’t continue due to my sister taking drugs as a teenager more than 16 years ago. She never got arrested or into any trouble she literally just went about with the wrong people. She has been off drugs for many years so we genuinely can’t see the problem.
Please can anyone let me know if there are any reasons why this would happen?

I’d contact them and ask them to explain their concerns and why it’s not been raised as an issue before now. Some agencies are more cautious than others, there’s still a lot of prejudice around drug use. In saying that depending on the type of drugs, how long she was using, how far into the lifestyle etc and how much contact she would have with children who were placed with you, they may have fair concerns. Remember that children being placed may have been removed due to substance misuse, which would merit a level of caution.

Your sw should meet with you to explain their concerns - have they said not for this panel (eg they have more assessment to do) or not at all?
