Would it be possible to adopt if I have Bipolar disorder?

I have bipolar disorder. It sounds scary but actually it is very well controlled and I live as normal a life as anyone else.

I already have 3 children, two are late teens and the third who is in year 6. My bipolar disorder has never impacted on my ability to parent. My children are all bright, well adjusted kids, so I think I can show that I am a good parent. I feel like we have so much we could offer a child.

I just have this feeling that when it comes to adoption it would be a big fat no.

It shouldn't be a big fat no. Like any illness, it should be looked at in terms of stability, what happens if you're unwell or in hospital, parenting ability, ability to deal with stress etc.

You could ring some agencies and ask.

Thanks Percy, I’ll do that. It’s good to know it’s not necessary a deal breaker.
