Adopting Step children

Can anyone advise if we need a solicitor to adopt step children? Both my husband and I wish to adopt each others' children (we are both widows) so it should be very straightforward. SS have suggested gettting a solicitor, but if we don't need one, we'd rather not go to the expense.

We've looked at getting perntal responsibility, but we'd like his children to have the option to get dual citizenship, which only I can help with, so it must be a full adoption.

I don’t know where you are but in Scotland you’d need a solicitor to lodge papers in court. It should be a straightforward process but it’s still a legal process that you should take advice on.

Thanks @Jellycatspyjamas we're in England and can lodge the papers with the court ourselves.

I do understand what you are saying though as it's a big deal, legally. Especially in terms of our respective late spouses families (who we still see regularly).
