Hi all,

Myself and my partner are trying to conceive using a sperm donor. We’d love it if my fiancé could adopt the child once we are successful, since I’m the one Who will be carrying the baby and therefore I’ll be the biological mother. Does anyone know how we should go about doing this, and how long it might take? Also, is it possible for us to start the adoption process before the child is born?

If you are married/in a civil partnership, your partner will automatically get parental responsibility and her name will be put on the birth certificate for children conceived through by artificial insemination. She won't need to adopt the child because she would already have the full and legal parental responsibility for the child that the order would grant. I'm not sure what the law is if you're not in married/civil partners but imagine it would be similar to unmarried heterosexual couples.

The situation is more difficult for gay men because they have to use a surrogate and different laws apply.

Better put a ring on it as Beyoncé would say!
