Would this have any impact on their approval for adoption?

My sibling and their partner are part way through the adoption approval process. We have already answered (weeks ago) the "wider family" questions regarding health etc, and no info was withheld, however I have just self-referred for counselling. I just wondered if anyone could confirm for me that this would have no impact on their being approved.

I'm probably just being ridiculous but don't want anything to affect their chances, they will make the most amazing parents! More than happy to wait to get help later if this is likely to get picked up and complicate things for them.

We weren't asked about updates in health after initial application of our network. SW's look at self referrals to services like that as resilient and resourceful. I'd be surprised if they ever asked about it so I'd be very doubtful of it having a negative impact on their application- how nice of you to care so much!

I can’t imagine you seeking support or indeed any form of health care would impact your sibling in terms of them being approved for adoption. Is there a particular reason you think it might?

This is purely anecdotal, but a friend of mine was an inpatient on a psych ward when her sister was approved for adoption. The SWs knew all details and considered them no impediment whatsoever.

No. I don't really want to go into it here, but my MH would absolutely not be construed as a risk to anyone else, let alone a child! One of my things is "overthinking", so that's probably why I was worried. And because we were asked a while ago to divulge any health issues.

I have OCD and over think! And we adopted. My OCD is under control. I can-t remember what we said about it. But it comes in the form of an earing disorder mainly for me, and I was open about it.

So no need to worry or update anyone.

I had CBT many many years ago for anxiety, worked well, but for OCD I had a lot of counselling to understand it and to work on my way of handling myself etc. So do get help. You'll be a great auntie, as I am too!

Social workers won’t be in the least bit interested in you having counselling.
