Adoption leave and pat leave?

Hi all , my partner and I are in the very early stages of doing some research about adoption .we are a same sex couple and I am wondering if both parties can claim adoption leave , or if one of us will have to take paternity leave, even if we have jointly adopted.

You can't both have adoption leave, as in both take a year off. However you can now split that year between you with shared parental leave. I think one of you could also take paternity leave.

Paternity leave is short, but you can do 'shared parental leave'. Essentially, the primary parents gets the equivalent of mat leave, and the secondary pat leave. But now there is shared parental leave, you should be able to mix it up a bit more. But it still pays to work out who gets the best package, and when and how, from work, and divvy it up depending on that.

Employers don't always understand adoption leave, so reminding them it's just the same as mat leave can be helpful.

I'm due to go back to work may/June time my husband had 4 weeks off. 2 week bridging and 2 week pat leave

Im due back soon from adoption leave, my partner took paternity leave entilement of 2 weeks and used holidays for another 2 weeks as the pay is muchly reduced!!
As said above you can split it anyway you want using parental leave rules, but there is only one lot of leave!
We did foster to adopt which sent my hr into a tailspin as i literally only had 1 weeks notice of leave for them! I would get copies of each of your adoption leave policies and look at the government website.
