Drinking In Pregnancy

Hi we were approved as adopters a couple of months ago and have a potential match of a little boy who is nearly eight months. He has been with foster family since birth and seems to be doing well. Birth Mother drank throughout the pregnancy. We've asked for some more information and I wondered if anyone has adopted a child knowing birth Mother drank and if/what the challenges have been? Also should we be assuming that there will definitely be a level of brain damage from the drinking or can environmental factors over ride the inutero damage? Also any questions we should ask sw would be greatly appreciated!

fasparent I can't seem to make the intervention link that ends .ca work. Can you let me know what the intervention is called?

Try looking at the FASD trust. They are run by parents for parents. Most (not all) are adopters.
You will find local support groups - ours meets 4 times a year, seeing the kids is really helpful! Its a glimpse into the future for us with FAS diagnosis...
It also gives an idea of how hard/easy the LA is to give support the children in the local schools with/without formal diagnosis......
And how easy is it to get your child diagnosed - it does vary depending on where you live!
Hope that helps, and hope your link goes smoothly ☺

Make sure you read up on attachment trauma as well. That's a far more likely scenario than FAS. I'm not minimising FAS but how many people drink before they know they're pregnant and their children don't have FAS ? AT is far more common and can cause massive issues. There's a great FB page called Therapeutic Parenting that gives advice on how to repair AT - which can take years to repair.
