Overseas adoption - getting a British birth certificate

We adopted DD from China several years ago. We applied for British citizenship for her but never got round to applying for a British birth certificate.

She's 11 now and would like one. Has anyone done this and can point me in the right direction?

I don't think you can get a birth certificate. We adopted our DS who was born in UK but only got an adoption certificate not a new birth certificate.

You only get one birth certificate - that was how it was explained to me.

Hels is right, a birth certificate is a one off deal.

Definitely adoption certificate not birth and I guess if your DD is 11 she may well have been adopted when China was designated rather than Hague?

Have you a branch of cach locally - no doubt they will be able to give better advice or try OASIS or ICA helpline.

Kew - we adopted her in 2005. We didn't have to re-adopt in UK but we did have to pay citizenship fee.

I think it is an adoption certificate I'm after for her to show as ID rather than her Chinese birth certificate/adoption papers.

Part of the attraction is the short form which doesn't give details of adoption.

Having Googled I think I need to apply to General Registry Office (GRO).

You won't get a birth certificate, but you can get an adoption certificate from GRO. I seem to remember something about an adopted children's register in Warrington too.

Whilst I love MN, do you belong to CACH - the charity for families with (or in the process of) children adopted from China. A great group of families who've been through similar with a wealth of experience that could help you with things like this? Active FB group for members too.

We adopted from overseas and it is the GRO you apply to. The paperwork they require is different depending on the country. If you look it up online, you will know more than them. DH certainly did when we applied!

PS does anyone know of any groups e.g. FB groups for children adopted from other overseas countries? Our children's home country is unusual but close geographically/linked to at least one more common sending country.

There's a yahoo group UKAO for all countries. I know my group will take families from close to Kazakhstan eg Russia. We do have a Facebook group but it isn't well used, the yahoo group is used like a mailing list.

I am on the Yahoo group but it has about one message a month at the moment.
