Passport

I wonder if anyone with experience can help with some practical advice.

Since we got our adoption order, we're now able to apply for a passport for DS.

I'm slightly confused about filling in the application. Although we know his city / place of birth, my instinct is that this shouldn't go on the form for the same reason that we don't share that information with anyone else.

Therefore the only 'place of birth' we have is the name of the placing authority i.e. the county.

So do I put this on the form instead of a city?

I spoke to someone at the passport office who was worse than useless and started asking about DS's birth certificate... which I am fully aware is none of anyone's business any more.

Anyone got a passport for their children and experienced this?

We put all their birth information on in terms of location but new name on the form and sent adoption certificate.
Not sure what the reason would be for not wanting to put this (sorry if I'm missing something obvious!)

I used DS's place of birth on his passport - I'm not sure why you wouldn't, its not a matter of public record that anyone can access.

I also put the town of birth . Usually the only people who see your child's passport are immigration officials and they certainly don't care

There is a special team within HMPO that deals with passports for adopted children (and other non-straightforward or sensitive cases), by the way, in case you are worried that this will lead to his birth parents tracking him down.

There are lots of things that adoption changes: place and date of birth are not one of them

I assume you have already received his new birth certificate with his new name and his place of birth? You must have this in order to apply for a passport. The details on the passport application have to match those on the birth certificate as they do for any application.

I would use place of birth as on original birth certificate too. There's no risk that I can see.

The only supporting documentation we have is the adoption certificate which doesn't the place of birth on it... like Tomatoes says.

I don't necessarily have an issue with DS's place of birth being on his passport but it's not on his adoption certificate so I'm a bit stuck.

I have just spoken to the passport office and they were brilliantly vague. Apparently I should include a covering letter with my application and 'hope for the best'. Ha ha!

You say you know his city so put this on and explain on the covering letter.

I do, Kew, but it's not referred to on the adoption certificate. I fear that it may make it worse to put it on the application. (Like I could just be making it up with no proof.)

Don't worry about it, just put it on and send the adoption certificate. They will be used to dealing with this.
