When is this usually issued?

And by who?

We have had the AO and have our celebration hearing at a different court in a couple of weeks... I am keen to get a passport fir LO so I can book a holiday abroad!

Ooh Congrats!!!! We have had ours recently (hooray!! ) We were told we would get short birth certificate at celebration hearing and full certificate one month later. We never got a short one given to us at hearing and when we get to the month I'll let you know about the other

I think it depends on how efficient the court is with its paperwork. For our second DC it was absolutely ages because (for some bizarre reason) DH used a local court rather than a family one and I don't think they were used to dealing with adoptions. It was at least 18 months before my applications to GRO resulted in a birth cert rather than a 'no records found' email. DD had a passport in her birth name though so we could travel, so long as we brought the court issued adoption order with us in case immigration had questions.

you should get a short print version with forms too fill out for full Certificate's, you can phone direct too passport office and complete over phone remembering the Passport office for Adoptions is in Southport if you apply local they will send too Southport or return too you hence delay's.
We explained over the phone of urgency had the Adoption Certificates and
court numbers, was all done on the phone received Number of full and short certificates within a few days. Think its still Southport would phone and confirm, Again may depend on the person you speak too on the other end of the phone for result. But will only take a few minutes too enquire anyway.

Adoption birth certificates are also issued in Southport same applies as above if doing over the phone make Shure you have all nessasory required Doc's handy. Your birth cert, marriage, National Insurance No's, passport and any other, may be required document's

We got the short certificate pretty much exactly one month after AO. When you order the long certificate you can pay extra to get it quickly. We ordered by phone the day we received the short one, got the long one about 3 working days later I think. The very same day we sent off the passport application - but over 2 months later we still haven't got it (long story, don't ask - usually should be a matter of 3 weeks for regular applications, 1 week for urgent applications, or there is even an option of same-day applications). So yes, maybe a good idea to consider fasparent's advice and apply to Southport directly to avoid delays. Wish I'd known that.

The passport office have been very clear with us that ds is NOT able to travel on his birth - surname passport post adoption order. I don't doubt that others have done this - our la advised that course of action but the passport office say that he should be refused boarding under these circumstances (even with accompanying documentation) so I would advise anyone to think carefully about doing that.

Stupid loophole.

Sorry can travel on Birth Name passports do it with our FC's all the time for years. Child's rights. Written Permission needed from SS , LA , BM/D
or otherwise. Also on Medical EU and associated Country's Forms from post office there is a box too fill in associated for such children too assure they are included in case they need medical assistance whilst on holiday.
All points are covered following correct procedures.

There will however be circumstances where travel abroad would not be possible, for an individual child.
LA's can process Passport applications on behalf of the child who is subject too full care proceedings.

Post adoption order? Not according to the passport office. You may be sure I checked several times! They say that post ao the child basically no longer exists as x birthname. So the passport no longer works. Logical. If really really really unfair and annoying.

TBH I never thought of asking the passport office, DS travelled on his birth name passport until he had to change because it was going out of date. I think DD did too. It was a flipping faff to get DS's changed to the new name, the passport office really didn't want to do it as neither H nor I have British passports. Fortunately, I was born in the UK and although they huffed a bit about me not having a British passport (I had to assure the guy that I had never formally given up my British citizenship) they eventually did do it.

It's very logical that they no longer exist, so passport is not valid BUT how do they know they don't exist?

We've recently travelled, prior to adoption order, on birth surname passports, we got asked nothing on way out and asked lots of questions on way back and needed to provide paperwork to explain difference in names.

But when they scan the passport the only way they would know, is if you have informed the office they don't exist. Obviously if you tell them AO gone through (at passport control), then they'll know. Having said that, we needed a letter from SS for the specific trip we were taking explaining their role and ours in the care of LO's and that would outline AO granted, surely, thereby telling them they don't exist! I'm sure it also may invalidate any travel insurance.

oh and good to know UK government have no issue with us taking children without our surname out of the country, but letting them back in is the concern

Yes I'm not saying it can't be done - it obviously has been! But the problem would arise if, upon looking at the letter you're accompanying travel docs with, a vigilant person decided to ring your la/va for confirmation - then they would have to say ao had been granted (I am told).

Unlikely? Yes.

Unlikely enough for me to gamble the cost of a family holiday on? Erm, that'd be a no.

Oh yeah. No way in hell I'd risk it.

Depending on the age of your child, how long placed, personality etc - traveling abroad can be a very stressful and unhappy experience for you all .

Are you sure your child will cope ? Have you done any weekends away in the UK?

After being ill informed by court re short certificate, my update would now read...

Short certificate arrived in the post 14 days after our celebration hearing/ 5.5 weeks after AO.

It's then £9.25 to order full certificate to arrive in 2 weeks or £23.40 for the priority service to get it in 2 days.

And with regards my comment on questioning how would passport control ever know?.... well, I didn't realise the general register office is part of her majesty's passport office now did I! Having said that, if people are using birth passports still they are not very joined up now are they...

If they have already had a passport in birth name they can get a new passport issued in adoptive name with the adoption order and the short certificate (it's what we did with DD)

Long certificate is due here Wednesday.. Is it worth me going to london passport office to expedite them, will that work does anyone know?

We did DSs passport on an expedited appointment- but then in the 7 day period there was a hitch as the person in the passport office wasn't entirely clear on what he was doing. It was sorted quite quickly though when we eventually got through to a manager

DD we have gone through the 3 week turnaround. The paperwork seems less arduous this time around- but I begrudge paying extra for a long certificate for the passport office when the passport office now issue the long certificate, surely they can just check their internal database.
