Do adopted children in Wales get preference in schools admissions?

Asking for my BIL who has just been matched with a child (fantastic news!). The child will be due to start nursery next year.
I think that as nursery education is not compulsory the admission criteria are different to primary, but they would obviously not want to move the child to a different primary after one year at nursery so need to get them I to the right school from nursery age.

Well, no need to worry about anything. I live in Wales and we don't have any of that nonsense where I live. As one as he fills the forms in he'll be okay.

I think the pp means excess children. It's excess school places we have in this part of Wales. Excess schools really.

They should look at the admissions criteria for the schools they are interested in. That will explain it.

I'm not 100% sure but I think that schools have to put LAC as a priority and they can then choose at individual school level about adopted children.
I would suggest phoning the school concerned to find their policy.

The main changes introduced by the Code are:
? a requirement that admission authorities? oversubscription criteria includes alongside
„looked after children?, „previously looked after children? as the first criterion in all
instances.

Your BIL will be able to get the criteria from the individual school. Looked After Children do have priority and I believe that includes children who have been in cae at any point, so includes adopted children.

However, nursery education in Wales is different from England - most schools have a nursery class which takes children the September after their third birthday. It is not compulsory but is unusual not to go. Some children don't though and that is fine. And although it is usual to attend for the full ten hours' provision, that isn't compulsory either.

BUT - the nursery class often has more places than the Reception class and attendance at the nursery cannot be used as one of the criteria for Reception admission. So it isn't unusual in popular schools to have some children in the nursery class who do not go on to the Reception class. Your BIL will be able to find out from the school how full their classes usually are and whether this has been an issue in previous years.
