Questions from Social Worker

A social worker from a voluntary adoption agency is coming to our home at the end of this week for an initial chat/meeting. Any idea what kind of questions we might be asked/ need to be prepared for?

Why do you want to adopt? What sort of age range of child/children? If you have a partner, how long have you been together? What kind of supports do you have? What would you do about work?

What is your home/area like? How would it affect other siblings? Have you fully accepted not having birth children? Wha experience do you have with children?

Really they want a chat, and from the chat they will try and draw out information to see if you are suitable or if there may be issues.
What is your journey to this point, anything traumatic. Previous relationships, other children. What was your childhood like. How do you cope with stress. Have you tried to adopt before, have you had dealings with the local authority before- anything that will hinder an enhanced DBR
Is there any other adoption in the family
Some of this will come through conversation and some from specific questions.

You will find lots of threads on the important but vexed topic of which biscuits to serve. Good luck!

Which they won;t eat, they will ask for water and they will not drink that.

You, however, will inhale all the biscuits in one go as soon as the social worker exits the door, in a binge frenzy of released stress.

I wouldn't go for dark chocolate digestive myself, on the grounds that you don't want to appear TOO intellectual to a social worker. Jammy Dodgers strongly suggest you are Not Taking This Seriously. Hob Nobs indicate lack of flexibility and humour. Pink wafers - you may struggle to tolerate diversity. Rich tea - you secretly despise social workers. Don't bake your own - they'll think you're needy.

You may of course choose to reject all this advice as lacking a strong evidence base.

I had ds's six monthly review today and only the IRO and ds ate the biscuits.

haha....laughing at Devora and Kews comments. I always found most SW said no to drinks and biscuits. Then I offered teas/coffees etc during a review and all 7 of them wanted teas and coffees.

I don't drink tea or coffee....

I never offered again.....

Social worker here (not adoption though - does that make a difference?)

Only ever been offered biscuits once (am in the wrong field, clearly) - choc vianneses.

Couldn't eat them. Was my first week as a NQSW, was joint visit, was terrified. Didn't know if I'd get hounded after for being unprofessional. Didn't want to spray biscuits crumbs whilst doing an assessment.

I do think that's a great choic of biscuit though!
