What present

Hi, a lovely school mum friend has recently adopted as a single mum and I would love to get her new children a little present. I asked her if there is anything they need and she said no but said she would be happy to receive a present for them so I know it would be welcomed. I was thinking about getting something personalised with their name on, is that a good idea/can anyone make some good suggestions? She has another adopted DD who has been with her since birth, should I get her something too?

How about tickets to something they can all do as a family? Cinema vouchers or a local attraction perhaps.

That's a lovely idea which I might pinch for Christmas but I really want the DC to know it is something just for them if that makes sense? So they feel they have 'stuff' that is theirs at their new home.

I think something with their names on is lovely and something children like. Or maybe some activity artwork that they could do and display in the house so feels more like home. I think anything given in love will be appreciated x

I don't know how old the child is but we were told our DSs had 'everything' then when they arrived they had about 6 toy cars between them and 3 board games. It makes me so sad when I go into their rooms and there is so little there. I go into my friends' kids rooms and they have so much! Don't get me wrong we have enough money but not to buy 7 years worth of toys all at once so I'd say toys, toys toys!!
People have said, as if they are doing us a favour, we won't buy them anything incase they think they'll get something every time! They poor boys are soooooo grateful for everything, bless them.
And when I think of the amount of money I've spent on new baby gifts! Ra!!!! Sorry to hijack post, I didn't realise I was so upset about it. Well done you for being a lovely friend x x

Oh Kazza, people are so annoying! I could definitely buy toys, the way I see it if she had had a baby I would definitely have got her a gift so this is no different - if anything a baby doesnt care if you buy them a gift but a child does. Toys it is! They are more fun to shop for anyway.

How about a family photo shoot?

I'd buy toys. Stuff your friend can interact with, without it being a competition (we found games a bit of a nightmare until relationships had been established).
Meaningful stuff like inscribed jewellery wouldn't have felt right to me at the start. Although my DH bought me a locket later on and I loved putting all our pictures in it

I can't stretch to a photoshoot unfortunately, MayFriday. And I really want it to be something for the new DC. I think I will go with individual toys they can call their own.

I have an adopted nephew. When he arrived I bought a plaque for his bedroom door with his name on to make it his and a box of craft things for him to do with his new parents. I also found a lovely "Good Luck in your New Home" type card.

How about some of those "I'm the big/little brother" t shirts/toys ? Think any sort of present will be well received, like you say your marking the event. How about some bedtime/snuggle story books.

Maybe a fun game they can play together. Depends on age though but could be fun.

Update: I got them toys and they were very pleased - their mum said they arrived from the FC with no toys at all

So it was definitely the best choice, there is a nearly new sale here on Monday so I might try and pick them up some more.

That's lovely. Don't understand why the foster carers wouldn't buy them toys out if their allowance?

No idea, I have tried not to ask questions in case it looks like I am prying but it was just something my friend mentioned. I know the FC had other children as well so maybe the toys were communal...
