ADD2 age 10 is due to go on a 4 night school residential next week.

She's only ever had 1 night away from me (placed age 2.5). She is emotionally a bit young for her age, doesn't like goodbyes, misses home when we go on holidays.

She's worried about being away from us. She's scared of some of the activities. She's worried she'll get laughed at if she chooses not to do some or can't do them. And worried she'll get laughed at if she chooses not to go (whole class going except 1 child who doesn't even do b-day parties).

Tonight is third night in a row she hasn't settled well (usually very good). We've got 6 more nights before she goes.

If she goes.

It could be fantastic for her if she goes and 'survives', but terrible if we have to collect her early and she 'fails' in front of her peers.

Not helped by it being on the IoW, so across the water.

DD1 has done various school trips. Her first was only a year after placement and she was nearly 2 years younger than DD2 is now. But I was never anywhere near this concerned about how she would cope.

I have confidence she will be well looked after by the adults. Not complete confidence that school mates will be supportive. I'm waivering as to whether she should go or not. But maybe that's me being overprotective.

Sanders EVERYTHING crossed for SandersDD2!!!!! HUGE HUGS.

Thanks
UnderTheNameOfSanders · 09/03/2015 21:10

The school have been tweeting with updates and photos, all sounds good.

However of course they won't say anything negative as it would worry parents.

And then there is the fact DD2 isn't allowed in the photos!

Excellent news. Hopefully they will take some photos of dd for you without putting them anywhere public. Hope you sleep well tonight!

PacificDogwood · 09/03/2015 22:48

I don't know whether you still need your hand holding, but here's mine if it helps Smile

I have an anxious DS2 (not adopted) who lacks confidence and is v down on himself - I know how hard it can be to encourage them to do things outside their comfort zone while not pushing them too hard, so sympathies on that count.

I really, really hope your DD will have a great time and will enjoy the company of her peers and the daytime activities. If the whole thing turns in to a positive experience she will have gained so much in terms of confidence, proving to herself she can do scary stuff and be fine AND you and her dad are always there. If it goes pear shaped that would be painful, no doubt, but again you'd be there for her, collecting her if need be.

Are you 'allowed' contact with one of the accompanying adults for updates? My boys' school frown on that kind of thing, but thought they might accommodate in your circumstances?

Wishing you a good night (and her) Thanks

Kewcumber · 10/03/2015 10:07

I have everything crossed here too!

Tangerineandturquoise · 10/03/2015 12:26

I have my fingers crossed for you, it is fantastic that she is going on the high of her swimming achievement.

UnderTheNameOfSanders · 10/03/2015 12:35

I'm feeling nice and calm about everything Smile

They tweeted at a sensible time last night that all the cabins were quiet. Then this morning they tweeted a picture of a very high swing thing and said all the group had done it.

It's all out of my hands now, so no point worrying!

And the weather is nice today.

We also had a nice evening with ADD1 last night watching a video tape of Notting Hill which she hadn't seen before. Planning on watching The Bodyguard tomorrow. Nice for her to watch films with higher rating without having to go to a separate room.

Bless you all. Hugs. Thanks

Kewcumber · 10/03/2015 13:07

Oh won't she be so pleased with herself if she comes back having had a great time [over-invested emoticon]

We will all cry and clap!

We knew she could do it...

UnderTheNameOfSanders · 10/03/2015 21:54

The trouble with tweets, is you get worried with what they are not saying.

So they are split into 3 groups. A tweet first thing saying DD's group had all done something Smile. Lots of tweets this afternoon on how well the other 2 groups have been doing, but nothing at all about DD's group since about 11am (apart from something about the boys).

Of course this is nothing to worry about (I'm telling myself).

phew. They've just posted that all cabins are quiet, so hopefully she's asleep. Smile

PacificDogwood · 10/03/2015 22:10

No, there's nothing to worry about Smile

I am so hoping she's having a lovely time.

Would it have been better or worse (for you and her) if this trip had happened at a time without social media and twitter and mobile phones, I wonder? Wink

UnderTheNameOfSanders · 10/03/2015 22:17

That is a good question. Smile

At the moment news is good news but no news is bad news.
Previously no news was good news.

Yes, it's weird, isn't it, how things have changed?

I hope she's doing as well as you're doing and that after a great time she'll come home to a happy welcome. Win-win-win-win.

Italiangreyhound · 10/03/2015 23:51

Oh you are almost half way through, is she back Friday?

Bless you.

UnderTheNameOfSanders · 11/03/2015 07:18

Oh I do like our head teacher.

He's sent us a tweet saying she's having a blast, throwing herself into things and no wobbles yet. Grin Grin Grin

Definitely Wine for the teachers from us when they get back.

Flowers and Wine to all of you as well.

Yup, back Friday evening. I wonder if they'll see Britannia on the way back.

Horray, when I see your name I sent up arrow prayers, please Lord let her (your dd2) be alright! I hope you do not mind, Iam a Christian and sometimes what drives me to God is that feeling we have for siutaions where we think, I wish I could do something! This is all I can do! And send you smiley faces!

She comes home later today. Grin
The weather has continued to be good.
The school managed to tweet a photo including her last night, by virtue of another child's arm being right across her face, but we know her clothes Smile .

(But DD1 crashed out last night feeling stressed due to GCSEs and some adoption stuff. Sad Didn't really want to go to school today, but we drove her in and sent her to pastoral care. She's probably missing little sister as well).

OP posts:
UnderTheNameOfSanders · 13/03/2015 12:17

Oops.
Maybe they decided they shouldn't have tweeted the photo after all as I've just gone for another look at it and they've deleted that tweet! (All the others still there). Poor school, probably think we'll be cross they sent it.

UnderTheNameOfSanders · 13/03/2015 20:18

Back safe and sound, tired but happy.
'Couldn't find' her clean shirts and socks in her bag so wore the same ones all week!
She had fun.

Thank you all for supporting me.
Relieved to have her home. Grin
