Adoption

A gift for a soon to be adoptive mum

Hi

I didn't really know where to post this but I thought I'd ask those more in the know.
My wonderful best friend and her husband have just accepted a child - they live in Oz and their son to be is currently in Taiwan. I'd like to get them a gift, something practical or helpful for their burgeoning parenthood, something that is probably geared toward adoption. I'm not talking manuals but hoping for a nice blend of helpful and personal - any ideas greatly received.
Thanks.

When I adopted my first I was really grateful for stuff for the baby - cuddly toys , cute baby clothes and blankets etc.

I was also delighted when people bought me flowers just like they would have done if I'd given birth to a baby. As much as I was over the moon to have adopted a baby I really wanted to feel and be treated the same every other new mum.

And new baby cards were lovely ( the adoption cards seemed more appropriate once we had had the adoption celebration hearing a few months later)

That's just my take on it all though - everyone is different!

Thank you for your reply. Their son will be 5 by the time he is with them, I just wondered if there was a place I could get a special card to celebrate them becoming parents.
Maybe just good old moonpig!

Oh I see! Sorry I assumed he was a baby. You can get adoption cards in larger card shops and Adoption UK used to sell them on their website too.

There are photo albums for children which the parents can record their voices on - we were given one which we filled with photos of all of our family and then got each individual member to record messages on.

Maybe that would be a nice gift.

I found this website when I was looking for something. Five Peas UK. Wish one of my friends found it for me when we adopted! Lovely memory books as well as cards etc. Hope you find something nice.

Was also going to suggest Five Peas. I bought a lovely memory book from there.

you could always get them something like Sally Donovan's 'unofficial guide to adoptive parenting' too - not sure if you want to go down the road of books etc. as they may have read a lot as part of their prep but it helps to have other adoptive parents perspective. Adoption UK also do a lovely 'before I arrive' book written from the child's perspective to share with friends and family, and adoption day cards on their site.
