please help me find my adopted brother

my mother was in care as a child and before she met my father we have found out she had a little boy and had him adopted i mangaed to get his birth records but obviously dont have his adopted records how can i find my older sibling

First of all it depends on how old he is as to the law at the time of his adoption.
You can take this info to an intermediary and they can help you get in touch.
Your local authority should have an address for this, but it may not be in your own town or even local area, but they do exist.

It is an Adoption and family finding unit you require.
Do you have somebody do go through the process with? It can be very emotional and speaking from experience I couldn't have managed it without support and I think most people who know me would say I'm strong emotionally.

my brother was born in feb/1956 i have his birth certificate and know my mother was in a mother and baby home but as far as im aware all adoption files from st monicas from before 1960 were distroyed in a fire so im lost to what to do next

The law was different pre 1975 and birth families were told that under no circumstances would adopted children be given their details. You will need to go through official channels to get the info you need.

If you find info from family members or unofficial means, I would still advise the official way anyway as you are more protected than you would be by just knocking on his door.

In all cases I know of the child was adopted into the local authority so if you and he have happened to stay in the same area it would be easier to find him, but honestly family finding services are brilliant and free if you can access them.

If your brother was adopted in Scotland, the rules were different. Adopted people have always had the right to access original birth certificates. Many people have used an organisation called Birthlink which is based in Edinburgh in order to contact relatives.
