Adoption themes in Mr Peabody and Sherman

It's no surprise there are Adoption themes in Mr Peabody and Sherman, after all it is about a dog who adopts a boy.

It touches on some deep themes, such as identity and also the chance of a child being taken away from their parent; as well as showing the moment Mr Peabody finds Sherman as an abandoned baby.

I just wondered if any adopters had braved it and what they thought?

I guess I am always amazed how often themes of adoption, loss of parents and being cared for by someone who is not your birth parent come up in children's films and literature. It's there from Kung Fu Panda to Tangled, Snow White, Cinderella, Frozen .... curiously quite a number of these films seem to often feature 'girl' characters!

Yet normally, (I am also shocked to notice, especially on International Women's Day) how many modern films for children are primarily about 'boys characters' .... but that is another story!

I've not even heard of Mr Peabody and Sherman, but you're right that the adoption theme is surprisingly common and often leaps up at you when you're not expecting it - Despicable Me was the last one for us. I suppose it's because loss of the mother/parent is about the strongest recurring theme in children's films.

Our DS has seen this (4yo) as well as Matilda!

He didn't really say much about Peabody, aside from he was happy with his daddy who is a dog. But talks about Matilda quite a lot. Not sure this was an ideal watch for him, but he has seen it non the less. His comments are usually along the lines of Matilda's mummy & daddy don't look after her properly, or Matilda lives with a lovely mummy, miss honey, she's her new mummy. She reads her bedtime stories, you read me bedtime stories...etc. it is actually really sweet, were just quite matter of fact about it being the film.

He tends to see the positives in such films, that the children are happy now with their new parents..(sorry posted too soon!)

I took my dd2 (adopted) and a friend of hers to see it. They seemed to focus on how much the boy and his dad loved each other, so took home a positive message.

My dd was a bit alarmed when the woman in the film tried to take the boy away from the dog.. had to reassure her that won't happen to us. Apart from that she thought it was cool that there was a film about adoption. She likes Tracey beaker and my parents are aliens, too.

have your kids seen meet the Robinsons? It is the most amazing film about adoption ever. I love it.

For anyone who does not know, Meet the Roninsons is a cartoon about adoption (and the future, and what deinfes you or makes you, you). The theme song is Little Wonders and at the end of the film the little boy gets adopted and comes to live at his parents house, which is a science lab (and he knows he will be a scientist). The boy opens his eyes in his new home and just shows such emotion and the mum shows it too. It's at 1.11.

I know they are cartoons! But he shows such happiness at the new home and the mum just puts her hand to her mouth, like it is the end of a very ling journey and she can't quite believe it is real!

I wonder if that is how I will feel when it finally happens!
