Adoption themed books

Has anyone read an of these adoption themed books? Can you recommend any?

We have Elfa and the box of memories, which although a little old for DD (28 mo.) has a lovely theme in it for older children about the importance of keeping memories alive.

We really enjoy The Teazles' baby bunny which is targeted at younger children, and is a beautiful short story. It also comes with a guidance book as to how to use the book and what to discuss with DD. We can finally read it without DH welling up :)

I've bought it and I like it but I've yet to try it on a child!

And on a side note, if you're buying other (ie non-adoption) books, pay attention to what you're buying. We were shopping for books for our STB DCs yesterday and were knocked sideways by the sheer volume of books whose story is some version of 'Are you my mummy?' or 'I've lost my mummy'.

Thanks, our social worker lent us the Nutmeg one.

My little ones love the Todd Parr books. They have great bright illustrations in them and are easy to understand.

I find the nutmeg ones hard going. Kids get totally distracted. I think they are a bit too lengthy. Maybe when they're older they'll appreciate them more.

Yes, it worked. Have been to panel, now just waiting. BMI was not an issue! Hooray.

A Mother for Choco just has a mum in so quite good for single adopter. I also read Todd Parr's We Belong Together and just change the words so that every adult is mummy (my son is only 2 so it works fine).

As WarmFeet says you do have to be a bit careful and read books through - people kept giving me Dear Zoo which is all about animals getting sent back for various imperfections and just breaks my heart - although it can be a good starting point for the 'it doesn't matter what you do, you're always staying with me' conversation.

O Magslee, I never thought of that and I read Dear Zoo to dd all the time. When we get to the camel bit (who was grumpy so they sent him back) she always says 'sad' and when I ask her why the camel is sad she says 'can't find his Mammy'. I don't know where that came from but she says it every time. She's nearly 3 and while we talk about her adoption, she really has no concept of it yet but I wonder if this is significant?

Aw, holycow, that made me sniffle. It's really difficult to know how each child is affected, however young they came to you, isn't it?

My DD 5 very much enjoys it.

When I was adopted my new (gay) uncles bought me a book called 'tell me again about the night I was born'
Although it was aimed at children adopted at birth (I was four) I loved it and read it all the time.
15 years later the same uncles adopted lil girl of their own and I gave them a book call 'tango makes three' which is about two male penguins who get given a egg to look after and raise. They loved it and it made the cry :) their lil girl is two young to read it yet though...
So either of them books are good x

Magslee how sad, had never thought of that aspect of it. Is Toy Story 2 or 3 a big no no or at least once they are older and can understand!
