Books for birth children on adoption

Hi, we're part of the way through the adoption process and have a 5 yr old birth DD. It's been suggested by our SW that we start to introduce the thought and conversation with her about an adoptive sibling.

She loves to read and I though it would be a great idea if we had some books available for us to read with her around adoption. Does anyone know if there are books out there that cater for this? My DD is 5 and just started to learn to read.

"All Together Now" by Anita Jeram is good and might be helpful in your case - it's about a Mummy Rabbit who has a baby rabbit and also a mouse and a duckling. "You're All My Favourites" by Sam McBratney might also be a good read for your DD as it's about how different children are all lovable to their parents. Hope this helps!

I don't have birth children, but I've heard great reviews about a couple of books

This one is called "Emma's Yucky Brother" and is about a little girl whose parents adopt a boy. She thinks having a little brother will be fantastic but finds that actually it isn't easy at first, because her new little brother is quite confused and sad/angry and so he 'acts out' at first. However they gradually bond with each other. You can browse inside and see quite a few pages here

It's probably a good one to discuss the idea that little siblings will find it hard at first and so sometimes they won't be fun to be with, because they might be confused/angry/sad/badly behaved. But you become a family with time and patience.
