My db and dsl are soon to be adoptive parents!
Could anybody please suggest a story book I can read with my 5 year old dd to help her understand a bit more about adoption? I have discussed it with her but I am not sure she really took it on board.

Your 5yo will take it all in her stride! Just explain that she is geting a new cousin. If it s a baby, you dont really need to explain anything else. Most 5yo domt know teh difference between a new born and 6 month old

If its an older child, and IF your child asks, just say that they had another mummy but she coulndt look aftre them so now they have a new mum and dad who are aunt x and uncle y. And he/she will live with them forever and he/she will be her Cousin forever

Kids are usually much less curious that adults . Your dd will be much more intereted in what gift she can buy for her new counsin and will she be able to play with him /her , rather than any complex questions about the childs background

Best wishes to your siL and dbSmile

Agree with Kristina.

There is a danger in over-preparing a child not directly involved (eg siblings) that it will raise questions where there wouldn't have been any naturally. And also that it encourages your DD to expect to know more about her new cousin than is her right to know.

I too would stick with a chat rather than a book.

Auntie X and UNcle Y are getting a new baby/cousin soon. Their name is Z anf they are 1 year old (or whatever) and we will go shopping soon and buy them a welcome home present.

Then respond to her questions appropriately if she has any.

There's a Topsy and Tim where Tansy is adopted.

Or is it Teddy. Both Tansya nd Teddy were adopted Smile

Thank you all so much for your advice.

I will keep it simple and address her questions as and when she asks.
