When I didn't see a thread in In the News for this, I opened one, convinced that no one would be so crass as to put this in Sleb Twaddle. Sigh.

There's Slebs and then there are greats like Paul Newman.

AnAngelWithin · 27/09/2008 16:03

oh right. sorry. i knew i would put it in the wrong section whichever I chose.

RIP Paul.

A true gent and a true legend. An actor and philanthropist. No mere celebrity.

RIP

expatinscotland · 27/09/2008 16:13

Aw.

Wow, I didn't realise he was that old, either!

And only one wife.

I do love Paul Newman salad dressing, but most of all, his microwave popcorn, which you can get here, is divine.

dooneygirl · 27/09/2008 16:18

That made me really sad to read. I've long admired him for his marriage, philanthropy, and let's face it, he was downright hot in the day. He's one of the few (for me) that have risen above being a "sleb", and actually did something worthwhile with their fame.

maidamess · 27/09/2008 16:37

Thats bad news. He was without doubt, the best looking man EVER. And a cool actor.

expatinscotland · 27/09/2008 16:50

sorry, meant to say that you cannot get Paul Newman microwave popcorn .

daftpunk · 27/09/2008 16:55

very sad news..he was brilliant.

SaintGeorge · 27/09/2008 16:56

2 wives expat.

Hassled · 27/09/2008 17:01

I loved him for "the fall is going to kill you!" in Butch Cassidy - when Sundance says he can't jump off the ledge because he can't swim. He was gorgeous.

magnolia74 · 27/09/2008 17:14

Cool Hand Luke Is my favourite
He was a wicked Egg Eater

ranting · 27/09/2008 17:15

I find that surprisingly sad, I remember watching him in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when I was young and I found him a lot more eyecatching than Redford.

Lizzylou · 27/09/2008 17:15

Paul Newman in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, perhaps the finest specimen of man ever,

oh yeah hassled, loved that film...and that line!

loved him in the towering inferno...what a hero.

HRHSaintMamazon · 27/09/2008 17:25

OH NO!

I now feel a bit icky about having such a crush on a man older than my grandad!

JulesJules · 27/09/2008 17:58

So sorry to hear this on the news.
He was a star, not a sleb.

Jux · 27/09/2008 18:01

Brilliant actor - never fancied him though. Loved The Sting.

Sad sad news.

peanutbutterkid · 27/09/2008 18:08

"Who's he?" said DH.

kizzie · 27/09/2008 18:37

Didnt he say about being unfaithful to his wife: 'why go out for hamburger when you've got steak at home?'

Anyway - apart from this and all the charity stuff..... he was just absolutely bloody gorgeous. The most beautiful fim star ever.

kizzie · 27/09/2008 18:38

and just superb in 'Cat on a hot tin roof'.

Oh no. I had a childhood friend who went to his summer camps for kids with cancer. She went every year and then became a counsellor when she was too old to camp. When she died (aged 21) she swore his camps has made her cancer bearable and allowed her to see a silver lining.

LouMacca · 28/09/2008 11:50

R.I.P. Paul

A beautiful man both inside and out.
