Is this weird or just how it is?

At my niece’s school, if a girl is on her period and needs the toilet during a lesson, there is a code phrase they’ve been told to use which might make the teacher more amenable to allowing toilet access. The phrase is “Please can I go to the toilet as I have a female medical emergency”. WTF? Imagine having to announce that impossible to crack code to the class as a young teen!

Very.
There's nothing like humiliation

🤦‍♀️

It’s atrocious. It’s also emblematic of the dehumanising culture that academisation has brought to state secondary schools. I think we will look back in horror at what we have allowed education to become.

Secondary will roll round before I know it, but it seems a very different kettle of fish now for the most basic things. When I was at secondary, some pupils would have packed lunch and some would go to the canteen. It was a clear choice (money may have played a part in parental decisions obviously). My niece takes a packed lunch, not through choice, but because there is physically not enough time to accommodate those who want to buy lunch. Apparently it’s not that unusual in schools now, so how has that changed so much?

Ridiculous. And to think that a group of supposedly intelligent adults came up with that idea. I’d be worried about who was teaching my children, quite frankly.

boxgoog · 01/11/2026 20:17

What part of it is coded?

ThreeMogsAndCounting · 01/11/2026 20:20

Not to mention - calling a period a 'medical emergency' is fucking absurd.

jetlag92 · 01/11/2026 22:09

That's ludicrous. Which school is it and I'll complain on their behalf.

phogee · 01/11/2026 22:28

It is absurd! Maybe any bodily function that can’t strictly align with the school timetable at all times IS treated as an emergency by her school!
