Anyone else got horrible back to work tomorrow anxiety 😥

I’ve had half term off, had a lovely relaxing time with lots of walking in nature, nice food and company.

Back to work tomorrow and I’m crashing today. Feel physically ill just thinking about what I’ve got to go back to at work. A ridiculously full mailbox, some tricky conversations with my team, a big change and an inspection all on the cards.

Im good at my job and know I’ll be fine once I’m into it. But dear god I am so over the rat race.

Anyone else feeling serious Sunday Blues?

Just needed to get it off my chest!

I’m self employed but still have that feeling because I’m sick of what I do but trapped because I can’t afford to stop/retrain. So I feel your pain. I’m actually off most of this week following surgery but I definitely have that “never want to go back” feeling

The Sunday dread is real OP!
The breaks are much needed, even when you love your job.
Inspection Sunday night dread takes it up quite a few levels!

Yep fully expecting ‘inspection call’ tomorrow morning, which will mean that basically I’m working ridiculous hours for the next 2 weeks and ironically not getting any actual work done.

@MidlifeMiseryGuts i totally get where you’re coming from! Too old to retrain but still got many years before retirement.

My dream job came up - 10 hours at a local library. Darn that mortgage that needs paying!

When the clock gets to 9pm on a Sunday I start to feel really miserable.
The rest of the week looms and I get that clockwork mouse feeling, where I leave peace of mind behind until the next weekend and I’m wound up for the week ahead once again.

Gettingbysomehow · 01/11/2026 11:03

Me and all my friends feel like this but me not so much as Im only in for three days then Ive got minor surgery followed by two weeks off.
Im very excited about the two weeks off and the surgery is going to solve my horrible painful problem so wins all round.

HollyhockDays · 01/11/2026 11:12

No. I couldn’t take any time off because colleagues had booked it.

I’ve had to instigate a new system for Christmas as they basically wanted two weeks off then leaving me to hold the fort.

My son has watched far too much tv and I feel incredibly guilty. I’ve been really busy. The only upside has been fewer teams messages interrupting me!!

DeutscheBahnTicket · 01/11/2026 11:13

I am just irritated that I got ill over half term so couldn't do very much. I will be ok back at work but would love another week off please!

Moll2020 · 01/11/2026 11:40

Me. I’m dreading going back, I’m 60 and just don’t want to go to work any more. I want to look after my grandkids, look after my parents, walk the dog, bake & potter round the house. Give my job to someone younger who is enthusiastic.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 01/11/2026 11:52

A bit. I had last week of and went on holiday to Krakow. Tomorrow I have to be in the office (usually wfh on Monday) and it’s month end close so not sure what there is to do. My colleague is great though and will have got on with it. In another way it will go quickly.

GreekYogurtAgainandAgain · 01/11/2026 12:03

@HollyhockDays - I’ve been there with kids watching far too much tv during school holidays due to working! They don’t care it’s just our guilt that is weighing us down!

@Moll2020 that sounds lovely, hopefully retirement not too far off?!?!

Yes, I get it often. I deal with it by:

  • drinking on Sunday evening to try not thinking about it, then of course I have a light hangover on the Monday
  • going to bed too late on Sunday night to extend the weekend, then of course I'm tried all day Monday
  • have a crap Sunday overall so at least I'm happy to see my colleagues on Monday

You're already doing well not being like me OP.

I also tell myself after holidays that I'm not going back 'to the grindstone', but to the 'routine' and I do like the regularity of office work, lunch same time every day etc.

Your work must be awful for you to be so excited about surgery and recovering from surgery! It's something I would dread more than going to work.

Retne · 01/11/2026 12:13

I'm very lucky I don't work Mondays and oddly enough, the back to work blues doesn't actually transfer itself to Monday evenings.

LottieMary · 01/11/2026 12:24

Yep absolutely. Everyone seems to be waiting for inspection at the moment.

Did A little work this morning, have put the laptop away and will craft this afternoon.

Haha it looks like that but I work in medical so its just everyday stuff to me. Day surgery.

OneElatedBiscuit · 01/11/2026 12:28

Also feeling it. Just had a few days off. And going back to understaffed department next week. I like my job but even so. Sometimes I just wonder what all this is for.

Redlocks30 · 01/11/2026 12:30

Reading your post makes me so glad to have left teaching! I get like this every Sunday night and doubly so after a holiday. FWIW, I don’t get it at all now I’ve changed jobs completely-fewer holidays but no dread!

Pickledonion1999 · 01/11/2026 13:08

Every Sunday I have this feeling of dread. At least this week I only have to work three days as opposed to the normal five as I have some leave to take. desperately counting down to retirement after forty years of this same old work.

professionalcommentreader · 01/11/2026 13:36

I used to and four years ago decided to retrain, two years ago used those skills to side step, not looked back and don’t have that dread, although if I win the lottery I’d still quit! I’m in my 50s, took a pay cut for initially but that gap has now closed. Took 5 year wasted time before I made the leap, 5 years of regret I should have done it earlier.
