Have you regretted getting an electric car and if so why?

Just as the title says really.

I live rurally and am considering an electric car as a second car. We have a diesel mild hybrid Volvo XC90 so it would be the smaller run around.

I bloody love mine! Range isn’t great - around 200 miles, but I charge it overnight which only costs £5-6 for a full charge. DH’s car is also an EV but with a much better range so we do longer journeys in his.

I think it depends what kind of driving you do. I had an electric car which was fine for school run, shopping and getting to work (all within a 10-mike radius) but really didn't cope with longer journeys (family visits, holidays) which I want to do more of now the kids are grown. Range anxiety was a real thing. So I now have a hybrid and I get the best of both worlds.

I love mine. I’m saving a fortune on petrol

No, I absolutely love mine.

We love ours! On our 4th now & wouldn’t go back. Charge overnight when cheap, 330 miles on a full charge.

GameOfJones · Yesterday 20:43

Absolutely love mine but like @NomadNo it's our second, runaround car for local journeys. I do think we'll swap DH's for an EV with a longer range when he needs his new car as we've been fully converted. They are miles cheaper to run.

notanothernamesurely · Yesterday 20:43

Love mine but charge 99% of the time at home. I’d not love it if I had to charge on the go v often cos it can be tricky and I don’t trust the infrastructure yet.

MrsJamin · Yesterday 20:44

Have had an EV since 2019. Love it. It's so quiet and easy to drive.

Woolyhats · Yesterday 20:44

Depends on the type of driving you do. We have one electric & one diesel the electric is brill but used for a very particular 60m a day commute so has saved us loads. The diesel one we use for longer drives going on holiday drives

Was he like that about petrol/diesel?

Ilikewinter · Yesterday 20:47

We also live rural. Range would be my only advice. DH has just traded his old EV in for a longer range one. My car is petrol but I have started looking at EVs, we tend to use mine as a 2nd car but I'd still want a good 250 miles. Cost wise, DH costs peanuts to run vs my petrol car.

Wasywasydoodah · Yesterday 20:48

The infrastructure has improved enormously over the 6 years we have had one. I love ours

Exactly this here too, we have one of each. The electric is great for predictable local running around (we have solar and good batteries so charging is no problem at home).

However I use the diesel for longer trips etc with the kids because we've had an instance where we struggled to find a charger that was available and worked, if it were just me in the car I'd have coped but trailing round looking for functional charge points was no fun with the kids in the car. Don't have that worry with the diesel so that's the long drive vehicle (we have family 90 mins away, there and back is the absolute limit of the electric car- any diversions and id be sweating).

LittleLlama · Yesterday 20:49

I also love my electric car. We have a Polestar and it has a reasonable range. Running costs are much lower, especially if you charge at home using off-peak electricity tariffs. There are no oil changes, spark plugs, or exhausts to service, mechanical upkeep is generally simpler. Driving is simple, smooth and so quiet. Never going back!

zebedeeboingboing · Yesterday 20:50

I have done 19,000 miles at a total cost of £381 - would NEVER go back to petrol / diesel. Love my electric car! Range approx 250 miles which suits me fine!

Bulletproofmama2021 · Yesterday 20:56

I have the longest range Skoda Elroq and absolutely love it!! I can do Gloucester to Birmingham and back in less than 50% ... I only charge once a month at home for about £8. This includes going to the shops, school runs etc...
Love it! It's my second ev and husband also on his second. We've had ID3, Tesla and Polestar

anniegun · Yesterday 20:59

On my third and would never go back to a petrol or diesel

Canape · Yesterday 21:01

We have one as a second car, we have a caravan so need a diesel car for that. I wouldn't want to go a lot of miles in the EV though.

Internationalwomendayheadquarters · Yesterday 21:08

Yes, I regret my EV purchase. Despite living rurally, the charging etc has been a breeze. Enjoy the sunshine miles - we have solar and I’m able to charge it up enough over the weekend for the miles I get. It’s quiet and easy to drive.

But there’s a fault with the system. Something is draining the 12 volt battery and the garage are not being helpful. I’m feeling very stuck with it on PCP - a certain amount going out every month and a car that I can’t trust.

I have a Skoda Elroq too. Although with less range. We needed a new car asap and it was the only version available.

I love it. I love the fabric dashboard. It’s so cosy feeling. Doubt I will ever go back to a petrol.

yelpmeout · Yesterday 21:14

I regretted mine but only because I didn’t have a charging point at home (we were renting) and therefore charging was a faff. Otherwise it was brilliant. I quite enjoyed breaking up a long journey with a planned stop to charge and get some lunch etc.

ToadRage · Yesterday 21:14

Never, but I can see the issue if you live rurally. My Mum lives in the middle of nowhere with no local chargers but we can get a really good distance on a single charge and it saves money in the long run, we have spent considerably less on charging over a month than we used to spend per week on petrol.

CosyFanTucci · Yesterday 21:23

We live rurally and I have zero qualms about our next car being electric. (Although I am aware that the batteries don't perform so well in cold weather.) I think there's been a real shift in people's perception of EVs this year.

kombuchabucha · Yesterday 21:24

I've had an EV for 6.5 years now. Started with a hatchback c.180 mile range, now have a small SUV c. 280 mile range. Love having an EV, would never go back. I live rurally too, mostly charge at home overnight. Took the hatchback with lower range on a few longer trips but do much prefer having the SUV a. for space and b. for the extra 100 mile range. I have no worries about range now during longer journeys, and there are so many chargers at most services now it just feels significantly better than when I first got an EV in 2020.
