Chester itself is lovely but it’s pretty small. I’d head into Liverpool on the train once I’d finished in Chester. The public transport is very good between the two places.

greglet · 31/10/2026 19:37

What are you interested in? There is loads I could recommend but it depends what you like!

StinkySheepdog · 31/10/2026 19:48

Chester Zoo are currently doing winter tickets for £25.

Walk round the walls. Visit the cathedral, Roman gardens, Amphitheater on the way round.

There are a couple of good museums we’ve enjoyed going to - Sick to Death and Deva Roman Experience.

Well, you have the whole of the North Wales coast at your fingertips. But I’d start with spending a night in one of the best places in the world, a residential library:

Welcome to Gladstone's Library - Gladstone's Library

Gladstone’s Library: Your Place To Think…Since 1894. Gladstone's Library is the UK's finest residential library, with 26 bedrooms, an on-site restaurant

The Albion pub for a drink or a meal is worth a visit. It’s a traditional corner terraced pub with wartime decoration. The landlady & her husband before he died did a lot for war charities. Just a few minutes pleasant walk along the wall towards the river from the Victorian clock in the main shopping street. We always pay it a visit when in Chester. Unusual old style opening hours though (mid afternoon closing) so check their website.

If you have a car Hilbre Island is a lovely walk from the Wirral.

ToadRage · 31/10/2026 21:29

Chester Zoo is lovely. I went in September. It was only a day trip so that was only place we went, my husband went back alone. He had mooch round the centre and said it was nice.

TheFogsGettingThicker · 31/10/2026 21:31

There's Ghost Tours, if you fancy that 😁 I went on one in an open top bus years ago - good fun

princessconsuelobananahammock · 31/10/2026 21:40

River Dee - boat trip, walk along the banks, ice cream, walk through Grosvenor Park.

Chester Market (more of a food hall but there are some shops too) is great, closed on a Monday.

Lovely independent restaurants, Porta (tapas) by Northgate bridge is great.

Walk the walls, stop at coffee shops on the way.

The cathedral is beautiful.

The Storyhouse has a great cafe/bar, gorgeous theatre/cinema/library. Always something going on in there.

Sanch1 · 31/10/2026 21:44

Chester Zoo is a must see!

Daily walking tour from the Tourist Information Office. There are also various themed tours - romans, medieval, vikings, tudor & stuart - as well as ghosts, and dark chester.

The cathedral does a ground floor tour and a tower tour which are both great.

It's Rowvember so lots of events to celebrate the Rows: https://www.heritagechester.co.uk/rowvember

The Grosvenor Museum is small but currently has an exhibition of the worst album covers in history 😬

Boat trips down the Dee.

As well as the train to West Kirby to walk to Hillbre (check the tide times!) you can go to Port Sunlight on the train. If you have a car - Llangollen and the Pontyscyllte Aqueduct; and Beeston Castle then over to Peckforton Castle for afternoon tea (and/or the Pheasant Inn at Burwardsley).

Heritage Chester | Rowvember 2026

Join us from 1st to 30th November 2026 as we celebrate Chester's unique architectural feature, The Rows.

If you have a car Hilbre Island is a lovely walk from the Wirral.

But check the tide times carefully and stick to the rules otherwise you'll end up needing to be rescued by RNLI

EamonnFyre · 31/10/2026 22:21

Go on the train to Port Sunlight. It’s lovely.

Christmassy24 · 31/10/2026 22:31

Thanks very much for this @LordEmsworth. Looks like we won't be short of interesting things to do. The aqueduct appeals, as do those castles. Will defo be looking into a tour.. Thanks again 😀

Yes, I should have expanded really. That said, if you follow the guidance it's a beautiful walk!

blueberrymojito · 31/10/2026 23:26

I live in Chester, it’s a beautiful city.

Cheshire Oaks designer outlet if you fancied shopping.

A hop on hop off bus tour - did this recently and enjoyed it, I’ve lived in Chester all my life and learned a few things! Also Roman amphitheatre, Cathedral, take a boat trip along the river Dee, walk the walls.

Grab some lunch at the market.

Ghost tour - Sat evenings only in Nov I think.

Get the Mersey rail to Liverpool and spend a day there.

The Pontyscyllte aqueduct is terrifying, but worth a visit if you can.

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 01/11/2026 09:00

Chester market, cathedral, Roman walls, Chester park, story house, picture house, boat tour, lots of good restaurants- I recommend upstairs at the grill if you like steak. Shrub if you’re vegan.

nearby- moel famau if you fancy a walk with lovely views, Liverpool for a day, Manchester for a day, beaches on the Wirral and north wales coast.

HangingOver · 01/11/2026 09:03

I've asked him and Chester says some nice things to do around him and throw ball and scatter snacks.

Sorry for the derail 🤣

Cheshire Alpacas, since you have a car.
