Help me make this Christmas a special one

Not in a maudlin way, I just want to make, what will be a very different Christmas a lovely one. I usually enjoy Christmas a lot, but I'm just about to have chemo number 3 for ovarian cancer and at Christmas I'll just have had infusion number 5. So far the effects haven't been too bad, but I'm aware that the fatigue and other side effects are cumulative. Add this to a general lowering of the immune system, so our usual celebration style of either going away for a couple of weeks or throwing ourselves into all of the local events will not be possible this year.

I'm not even sure if I'll be up to doing much at all, even now, I have a few days each cycle where I basically lie on the sofa like a consumptive Victorian lady (I also have most days when I'm absolutely fine). We have no family close, there's just the two of us and that's fine, we enjoy each other's company. We'll decorate the house, my partner's totally up for all the cooking etc if I can't join in, we'll read, watch the odd bit of TV or watch a film or two, sing cheesy songs loudly, may be go for walks if I feel good, but can you lot come up with anything else we can do to make it extra special?

Hi Op, didn't want to read and run without wishing you good luck for your treatment.

I'm not sure about the day, but for general build up you splurge on a fancy advent calendar, there's all sorts depending on what you like.
There's lots of craft kits for making your own decorations too, which can be fun. My mother in law brought a bunch with her last year, which i'm going to try and make before she visits this year (although i have no idea how macrame works, lol)

While out with people, what can be less invasive are musical concerts in churches or concert venues (churches better for your situation as colder so less comfortable and often less full, or midweek lunchtime concerts in concert venues) …but many choirs and musical groups come together to play lots of the beautiful music of Christmas.

if you are up to it, that could be really lovely for you. But also, many of those concerts are relatively cheap…so less need to feel guilty if you can’t go on the day.

What foods are you enjoying now? As I know for some, their tastebuds change during treatment or there can be some foods not allowed. If you loved the full turkey experience, get a turkey breast to roast and maybe get everything preprepared to just slide in and cook. Or plan a couple of favourite sides to do (together if you are up to it).

Also think about what easy foods you like to snack on, to graze during the season, or if you are having a Victorian consumptive lady day - do you love sausage rolls (and are there particular brands, or using your butcher’s sausage meat..but ready rolled pastry this year…)? Are you a hummus and breadsticks and olives pair? Do you like a good cheeseboard? Do you love 15 tubs of Quality street (or a nice box of Leonidas chocs)? Make a list of the things you both love that are easy for grazing to get in.

Between rounds 3 and 5, will there be a day or two that you might feel energized? And might make a favourite lasagna (well 2, as 1 is to freeze), or curry, or casserole/stew…? Just to have a couple of your favourite meals in the freezer that can be easily taken out and reheated or baked without much effort over the season.

And maybe think about what would make either a consumptive Victorian lady day, or just a nice relaxed day of you and DP, look cosy. Do you have a cosy throw/soft blanket to snuggle under, and enough cushions of different shapes sizes to make the couch comfy? Are there particular smells you love, that could be in reed diffusers or nice candles? Do you have an open fire/solid fuel stove? Even if you don’t normally use it, can you get the chimney swept and have some wood/fuel in to be able to light it for a cosy day at home? And what about lighting? Does your relaxation room (I assume the sitting room) have nice soft lighting conducive to relaxing or just a central ceiling spot? Can you get a couple of side lamps or some fairy lights to twine around the place (Some are very discrete and battery operated) to soften the glow. And is there 1 corner with a comfy chair and good lighting for reading, if you might like to do that (or some crafting)?

And do you have some nice bathing products to look after yourself and your body as it goes through its internal war? Comforting smells, nourishing body lotions, soft sponge etc?

Sorry, they’re all a bit random. But I hope they help the thinking process. And good luck with the treatment.

Thank you, @BiddyPopthe2nd The Christmas concert idea is lovely, we have a couple of churches locally that do choral singing and recitals, I'll definitely look into that.
Food? - I have zero issues, well unless you count eating anything and everything in sight. If I get to the end of my chemo without having put on 10kg it'll be a miracle! The only foods not allowed are soft or uncooked eggs, unpasteurised cheeses and ferments, alcohol (this isn't an issue for me, I don't drink much anyway) and raw foods like sushi :-(

I don't like turkey so our normal Christmas food is a sirloin of beef with all the trimmings on Xmas eve than we pick at it all over xmas with salads, bread, crisps etc, that's definitely staying, but I might just stock up with leibniz biscuits, i have a real love of those, and sourdough crackers and pate, mmmmm.

Yes, freezer meals would be a good call, if only to give my long-suffering nursemaid/husband a break, he genuinely goes above and beyond. We don't have a chimney, we live in an apartment in Portugal, but we do have a bioethanol stove so we can snuggle in front of real flames. We don't ever use the central lights, only side lights but some fairy light would be great, I'll add them to my list. I like the idea of us both lying snuggled up on the sofa reading Christmas books, I think I'm going to splurge on books this year (and an amazing bottle of port for nurse mr mumwheresmyribena). You've just made me think and I may get us some lego and maybe some puzzle books too. I'm also going to see if I can source some special/xmas coffees - another indulgence I'd forgotten about

Good idea about the body/bath smellies, I'm off to raid the Korres website now!

Also, @OctoblocksAssemble You're right about the advent calendar, we both have wooden reusable ones, but mr mumwheresmyribena's is much smaller than mine, so I need to replace it, I think I might get a couple of posh chocolate ones. I'll investigate craft kits, too.

Thank you both, much food for thought to be going on with.
