A question for the knitting experts...

There should be an image attached.

I'd like to knit this scarf. This one is 23cm x 200cm The description states it is a weighty garter stitch.

Can anyone please tell me what type of yarn I would need for this? I'd like to use wool rather than synthetic.

Thank you!

What weight does the pattern say?

There's no pattern, the scarf itself is sold by toast.

In that case I think I’d use an Aran or worsted. DK would be too fine and chunky would be too, well, chunky!

I'd go for a 100% merino

DrWhosJazzyScarf · 30/10/2026 16:23

If you’re a beginner, I’d look on Etsy or Ravelry for a pattern. Looks like a chunky knit to me, potentially a double-strand of DK yarn.

Londonmummy66 · 30/10/2026 16:27

I would have thought Aran on 6mm needles but buy one ball and try a 6 in square and see how it works up.

Thank you! What does worsted actually mean? I'm quite new to knitting.

Would it not be too fine? Or can you get heavier merino?

I ccouldn't find a pattern anywhere, but did read something about the pockets just being folded over and stitched at the sides.

Worsted is a commonly used thickness of wool in the US. Closest UK equivalent is Aran, I think. They have different wool weights - it can be frustrating but there's usually a roughly equivalent UK size

This is a useful guide @Downtherushingglen and I agree and aran or worsted would hit the right balance. Merino is a type of sheep and therefore wool, and as far as I know (never knitted with it) it will come in various weights. So you want to identify the weight you're going for - aran - and then make sure you're choosing a wool not acrylic etc. Although you could do a mix if you wanted.
This scarf would be very simple to knit. Just decide length and width - the chart in the article will help you work out roughly how many stitches to cast on, then just knit away until you've got your length, remembering to allow extra for the pockets, cast off and sew the pocket sides and you're done!

You could make it interesting by adding some tonal texture or choosing a wool with a fleck or a slub or some other variation. I haven't knitted anything for aaaages but you're inspiring me!

What's the general consensus on wool vs synthetic? Is it as controversial as everything else in this life?

WitchesBritches · 30/10/2026 16:51

Personally, I'd have a look on Ravelry until I found a scarf I liked the look of & see what wool they had used. Plus how many stitches they had started with for what width.

I like buying my wool from Wool warehouse & I love drops merino DK.

( well I used to I cant knit anymore 🥲)

Error404FucksNotFound · 30/10/2026 16:52

Ooh i like those! Actually, they look similar to what im using at the moment to knit an infinity scarf.

Nice wool and nice work! 🤩

drspouse · 30/10/2026 16:55

This pattern is almost the same but you'd have to sew the ends over to make the pockets.

I like this one even better but the pattern is a bit more complicated.

This is almost exactly the same (you'd leave the button off - there's no pattern picture but I looked at the only project).

You need to sign up to Ravelry to see them but it's free and the first two patterns I linked to are also free

I really fancy knitting no 2 now as I have a lot of Aran left over from a blanket.

Honestly if you are new to knitting i'd get on ravelry and look for a pattern that is very similar to what you want to knit and follow a pattern at first. There are thousands of scarves there

Its bad for the environment and doesnt keep you as warm but it is cheaper and easier to care for.
