Is your sofa rubbish?

We’re looking to buy a sofa (never bought one before!) and I’ve heard so many people say theirs went saggy quickly and needs a lot of replumping, or just generally it’s not very good. Loaf particularly people don’t seem happy with?

Is anyone happy with theirs and if so where is it from?

We had a Cotswold company one. Not comfy, the seat is too wide.

MiddleAgedDread · 28/10/2026 20:37

No it’s great, from sofa workshop (not even sure if they’re still going!)

Ineedanewsofa · 28/10/2026 20:38

Yes, my sofa is rubbish (still)

I spent a lot of money (to me, at any rate) on a sofa bed from the Futon Company, and have regretted it ever since. The mattress (which doubles up as what you sit on!) is way too firm to sleep comfily on, but gets saggy in the spot where I regularly sit 🤨; it has wooden arms that dig into you even through cushions; the mattress cover was pricey but is very unforgiving if you make the slightest mark on it; and, possibly the worst thing, the seat slopes down a bit, so if you lie on it you feel like you're rolling towards the back! Plus it's long and weighs a ton and the only way to get it out of the room/through the front door is to disassemble it, hence why, much as I'd like to give it away and be shot of it, I just can't face the faff 😩

I had one of theirs. I loved it and one of my sisters got it when I lost my home (😭for that, and also for my custom-made sofa!) It's been used every day and many nights by her family for 22 years and is still great!

They went out of business in 2023. Such a pity.

Besidemyselfwithworry · 28/10/2026 22:37

My sofa was my aunties she moved to a smaller place and gave it (well 2 sofas and 2 arm chairs) us
its a duresta one it’s 12 years ok and Looks brand new and we have 3 kids and a dog!

Tinybirdie · 28/10/2026 22:48

I love my Loaf sofa. Comfiest thing ever. It's my pride and joy

Borborygmus · 28/10/2026 23:10

Ours went saggy very quickly, so I'd avoid M&S.

Cheeseplantalltheway · 28/10/2026 23:12

Sofas are a big problem. The seat is usually made for taller people and it's so difficult to find one that's comfy.

LondonLass2026 · 28/10/2026 23:16

I have an ex-shop display sofa from Next, and it's lasted 13 years and still going very strong. Got it heavily discounted as it's ex-display.

We have dogs and apart from a few loose threads, it's retained its shape and colour.

RaggedRocks · 28/10/2026 23:19

I have an aisles worth of airline seats c/w under seat life jackets that I got from a junk shop. Anyone comes around I tell them to sit down and offer them drinks and snacks from the trolley.

LittleWeirdo · 28/10/2026 23:21

I have 2 sofas from DFS that are now looking a bit shabby, but were and are super comfortable. One of the best things I’ve ever bought, now 18 years old and need replacing but I don’t think I’ll ever be able to afford to.

SwedishEdith · 28/10/2026 23:21

Got a Multiyork one a few years before they went bust. Clearly, they were cutting corners by then. Sofas seem to be either good looking but uncomfortable or comfortable but ugly.

Boxingshibes · 28/10/2026 23:26

Ikea is your friend. We've just replaced 10 year old ikea sofa for a new ikea sofa.
You can go and test them. I think 90% of my house is ikea.

Imustbuynewtights · 28/10/2026 23:26

Ours are Parker Knoll. They were very expensive initially but have lastest more than 20 years in beautiful condition.

INeedAnotherAlibi · 28/10/2026 23:28

I’ve got a second hand DFS one now that’s okay. The last ones we bought from Sofology were rubbish. Started to show wear just after warranty ran out - cushions giving, arms sagging, the dye rubbed off and marked the radiator behind it. Not cheap either! I wouldn’t buy from them again.

TheFlirtationsNothingButAHeartacheNsoul · 28/10/2026 23:32

G plan 55 range from J.lewis 11 yes old still ok condition.
First one we got was poorly finished so back it went

Ruthietuthie · 28/10/2026 23:38

If you want it to last and last, you need something with a kiln dried, hard-wood frame and coil-sprung seats. We have the Sophie Conran ones (her own range, not the ones for Johns Lewis) and they will last a lifetime.

mumumental · 28/10/2026 23:51

Origami Habitat one, 40 years old, recovered a few times. A smaller Parker knoll, which is great. Newer one is Alstons, very good.

ProjectFailScary · 29/10/2026 00:55

Got one from Next. It’s been through a lot, including somewhere to sleep after a marriage separation. It’s quite knackered. Looking to move next year so will get a new one for when I do. It has to be pet-proof and not too low.

5289843DM · 29/10/2026 08:25

We've been looking for our unicorn sofa for months! Leather, corner is all we want, but finding the right size is tricky. We went to the usual sofa places then discovered a world of sprung seats, foam, strapping etc. 1 shop didn't have the specific range we'd gone in to see, because that is on display at the other branch- 3hr round trip away!

Currently we are sitting on a futon company chair/bed which we already inherited from a relative and have replaced the cover twice. Its not overly comfortable!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/10/2026 20:46

Our sofas are brilliant. We spent a massive amount of money on 2 x Ercol sofas a year ago and they are excellent. Still look brand new. Really comfy yet sturdy. Money really well spent.

Whatshitnow · 30/10/2026 12:32

Parker Knoll here too. Very comfy.

IntentionallyAsymmetrical · 30/10/2026 12:43

It would win no prizes for looks these days after more than a decade of being enjoyed by our cats and late dog, but it's very comfortable. We got it secondhand about 15 years ago for £100. It's a Gascoigne sofa - new ones cost around £5k I think. That's far more than I could ever have afforded for a new sofa.
