They will be Prime Minister for the next 10 years....

Hypothetical question:

If our country had to have back in power as Prime Minister, any of our PMs since David Cameron (excluding our current one), who would you chose and why?

Cameron
May
Johnson
Truss
Sunak
Starmer

Wondering in part from a recent conversation where the long Prime Ministers terms of recent decades came up.

So that is the question - if one of the above came back into power, and had 10 Thatcher/Blair like years - who would it be and why?

May, because I think she might have been a half decent PM if she hadn't had to deal with all the Brexit shite.

Redheadedstepchild · 28/10/2026 20:07

Absolutely none of them. I think that in this instance, the US constitution has it right. Two terms and you're out. No coming back. No having a few years out then staging a comeback.

However good or bad they were, they were of their time. Let's move on.

She definitely had a poisoned chalice. I felt for her and I am not remotely a Tory.

Definately not Liz Truss
thanks to her our mortgage offer was withdrawn and what should have been £900 is now £1300 so thanks Liz for that -
not!

labamba007 · 28/10/2026 20:11

May or sunak

Octavia64 · 28/10/2026 20:11

sunak.

the only moderately competent one of the lot of them (and I’ve never voted Tory)

Redheadedstepchild · 28/10/2026 20:13

Going back a few decades, maybe Gordon Brown was handed a raw deal.

Sotiredimightreallydie · 28/10/2026 20:14

In order of preference. Might have added a few

Starmer
Cameron
May
Sunak
Random bloke from the street
The Grinch (before he became nice)
Johnson
The actual devil
Truss

I agree with this. They all go bonkers in their 3rd term anyway. Although at the rate we're going. 3 terms of the same person seems like a fantasy. One term would be handy!

😆😆😆😆

that’s a clear list!

id have Starmer or Sunak.

personally I don’t think they were much different in many ways

RedSpotTeaPot · 28/10/2026 21:09

Not really answering our question but just imagine 10 years of Johnson?

Christ!

MyOtherCarIsALandrover · 28/10/2026 21:21

Absolutely Sunak!

There was no way he had a chance of winning the GE with everything that had happened but I think he'd have made a really decent PM.

It felt like 10 years didn't it!

MrsKateColumbo · 28/10/2026 21:37

Sunak, May or Cameron.

I would like to forget Truss please

RocksByThePool · 29/10/2026 10:16

I suppose I could also have said "if they were still in power..." Perhaps Cameron is the outlier there as he'd already had substantial time in office.

Perhaps each of them represents the 'what if...' if their leadership had continued in what had been the normal way for our PMs. I think Johnson in particular really saw himself as that Churchill like statesman continuing on vs the chaos and corruption his time encapsulated.

And yes to no to Truss! Eviscerate from memory. Watched a youtube video of her 'leadership' time after her new book came out. What a mess that was!

Interesting provocation! I think Truss and Johnson were both absolutely disastorous, and I would never want to see either return to frontline politics. I think Cameron had his time, and was an okay Prime Minister - and I would certainly take his Premiership over the volatility and uncertainty of the last few years - but he made some really fatal mistakes (not least bumbling us out of the E.U). I think Starmer, Sunak and May all had difficult circumstances, and could - in an alternative universe - potentially have been fairly decent Prime Ministers (in that order of preference, for me).

blinkingpeck · 29/10/2026 10:35

Definitely Sunak. He could have been a very good PM given more normal circumstances. I wish he was back in charge.

I do wonder if we mightn't see him back leading the Conservatives again at some point. He became leader very early - potentially too early - in his political career and he's clearly intelligent and ambitous.

Bellu · 29/10/2026 11:16

God, none of them. But if I HAD to choose, then probably Sunak then May.

They both did the decent thing staying as MPs, too.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 29/10/2026 11:22

Poor Liz Truss getting a hard time. Lettuce not forget what she did for our pork and cheese. She has a book out, don't you know. Should help with the heating bills when you throw it on the fire.

intheshadyborder · 29/10/2026 11:24

Starmer because he's the most intelligent and reasonable.

Assuming you live in one of those constituencies he promised to divert the deprived area level up funding to?
And were happy with May cosying up to the repulsive DUP (and their recently imprisoned leader?)
Sunak and May and "doing the decent thing" do not belong in the same sentence

Bellu · 29/10/2026 18:41

To be fair you're eliding two post/ers together there.

Compared to the cowards who stropped off, serving out your elected term as MP is doing the decent thing.

That's not the same as saying all the things they did were decent. I wouldn't want any of them back. But that wasn't the question.
