Can any dentists on here please help?

I am in excruciating pain with a sore in my mouth and I have no idea what to do about it. I've tried Anbesol, Gengigel, Iglu Shield and also taking ibuprofen every 4 hours. Nothing seems to work. I can't eat or drink or even sleep without extreme pain but everyone I mention it to seems to think it can't hurt as much as I say it does but honestly I'd rather have my kidney stones back than this!

I am without an NHS dentist so an appointment will cost and I imagine if I book a Drs appointment they will say it's a dentist issue.

I have attached a photo if anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.

Not a dentist but has similar a few years ago. Make a mouth wash with warm water and salt. Use it three or four times a day. I felt almost instant relief

In my experience, a GP wil tell you to see a dentist. Sorry.

tomorrowfollowstoday · 29/10/2026 06:12

You do need to see a dentist - how long have you had it?

Have you tried 111 as advised by NHS?

In the meantime salt water is good advice.

Agree with @CrewHoodSleeve23
Salt water mouthwash works really well.
I use it for sore gums or that nagging toothache from sensitive teeth.
I find it most effective when it’s quite warm and very salty. It just numbs your mouth, give it a good swill round.
My dentist recommended this after weeks of discomfort and waiting to see him, he said if it doesn’t work within a few weeks to come
back and I was most disgruntled!
But it worked!
Easier and cheaper too.
For cold sores and blisters my mum would swear by a smear of honey.
It is very soothing, and is a very ancient remedy so also work a try.

It looks like a very large canker sore. How long have you had it?

I had one on the roof of my mouth recently that was huge, I damaged my palate on a piece of French bread. Large sores can take up to three weeks to go and yes, the pain is absolutely awful. Drink through a straw.

if you’ve had it for longer than three weeks though see a dentist urgently. I found anbesol did help but only temporarily. Nothing else did - I just had to wait it out.

LegoPandemic · 29/10/2026 06:56

How long has it been there?

Bunnybigears · 29/10/2026 19:43

Been there just over a week. Salt water rinse have eased the pain a little thank you but only temporarily.

Keep it up and should settle. I’m not underestimating how painful it is now though. I think because your tongue will always move (even with trying not to( and salivia, it’s constantly being irritated If the salt water helps, do it every hour perhaps. Hope you get some rest tonight

LegoPandemic · 30/10/2026 04:10

If it hasn’t gone in another 2 weeks, go to the dentist. In the meantime salty water. Hope it heals soon.

Yes. They said make a dentist appointment. I do not have an NHS dentist and can't afford private. Every month I do the rounds of calling all dentists that are on the NHS list saying they accept new NHS patients. None of them are accepting NHS patients. I am on multiple waiting lists. My best position is in the three thousands.

Oh you poor thing - that looks really sore.

Have you tried Orajel?

Thank you. Yes I have tried that. I have tried a few and everything just makes it hurt more. I think it's going to have to be salt water rinse and time unfortunately.

Are you anywhere near London? If so, you could try this:
