Decorating from the mayonnaise jar (filled with paint)

My late DH always kept a large mayo jar filled with white emulsion which he would then go round touching up the odd marks and occasionally paint larger sections from.

he passed two years ago and I’ve not kept up his wall houseworks.

I did a few patches the other day but have realised it needs a lot more attention than I realised.

the skirting boards and architraves are stained wood.

I don’t have the spare cash to pay someone but also don’t have the time or more realistically the energy to do more than maybe an hour at a time.

does anyone have any decorating hacks to help me get this job done over a longer period please?

Well the answer is to do one hour at a time then, surely? :)

How about doing one wall at a time until you've finished a room, then start on the next room.

Alternatively, you can just not bother with it - I don't think we've ever done that kind of patch repair.

If it needs more attention than you realised, I'd just bite the bullet and do it al with a roller.

I’m recovering from a cancer op. I can manage an hour a day so don’t fancy washing up a roller (I know I can clingfilm it).

Sorry to hear that.

But yes, you can cling film it or tie a carrier bag around it and it should be fine until you're finished.

You either do a bit at a time or ask a friend or family member to help you. I’m not sure what magic solution there is to getting a house decorated?

Sorry about the cancer. You can just do an hour here or there if you find that doable. Or either find a friend or relation who will help for a favour - you can pay them back with another favour - or save up and pay someone.

Pick a wall at a time, tape it up one day, paint another day. Keep all your kit in a bag.
It's fine to do it bit by bit, we do it that way to limit the need to pack up things, and we also have little time.

KnickerlessParsons · 26/10/2026 18:15

Or, just don’t do anything. It can’t be that bad.

I use a small roller for bigger touch ups. You can get a little pot to use with them. It’s so much easier
