Urgent - need party food at short notice

I'm organising my dad' funeral on Wednesday (28th Oct) and we're doing a small buffet after the service - just sandwiches and cake. I was going to get a M&S food order but after saying I could get it for Wednesday by ordering today, the website now won't let me do an order before 1st November.

I can't get a Morrisons, Waitrose or Sainsbury's party food order for Wednesday either, and Tesco don't seem to do party food orders.

What can I do? We need to provide light refreshments but don't really have capacity to organise from scratch. The actual burial is happening before the service, 40 miles away, so we won't be able to go to the church early and organise it ourselves.

Any suggestions welcome as I'm really panicking.

Costco? You can pick up sandwich trays without ordering, they do big cakes too.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · Yesterday 15:55

Ask a local cafe.

We have regular wakes at work and the local cafe provides sandwiches and cakes.

Local caterer/cafe - have a google in your area. You'd be surprised how flexible they can be to get the business and the personal touch is doubtless what you need at the moment. If you lived near me I could make some suggestions but unless you're in Swansea I think you'll need to have a look online. Sorry for your loss.

sorry to hear about your loss.

do you know anyone with a costco card that isn’t too far from the venue as they do sandwich platter.

Alternatively a local cafe, bakery or sandwich shop may do a lunch order for you.

Costco? If you are a member/know someone who is and have one nearby. They do really good sandwich platters, cakes and cookies etc which you don't need to pre-order.

HewasH2O · Yesterday 15:58

Try Ocado?

persisted · Yesterday 15:58

A message on the local community Facebook page now asking for recommendations for it. Then ring round those cafes Monday morning to see who can help.

jay55 · Yesterday 15:59

Do you have a Pret? Or other sandwich place that do office orders.

So, sorry for your loss. I’d actually ask a friend to ring round bakeries for you, anyone who has offered you support might be able to do it.

Hadn't thought of asking cafes or on FB - thanks. No Costco locally unfortunately.

The funeral directors may have contacts.

What about asking a pub near the venue that do catering?

Yep cafes, bakeries, catering companies, I bet you can find someone who can help. If you were near me I would recommend these people - they are second to none: https://www.caswellcatering.co.uk

Hope there's somewhere near you that does something similar, I am sure that there will be. I hope Wednesday goes as well as it possible can for you.

Thank you everyone - much appreciated.

I'm so annoyed as I worked out a few days ago that we could order by the end of tonight from M&S and I spent ages working out what to get. What a waste of time.

It's in Peterborough.

I would consider just doing cakes so they don’t need to be fridged. You could buy scones and a range of cakes from a super market and serve them with tea. Add some bowls of crisps and some fruit.

Sorry for your loss.
At my mums funeral my dad ordered the food for the wrong date - ended up getting a load of the meal deal sandwiches from the supermarket, which actually worked well alongside sausage rolls, cakes etc. Is there anyone who could do that for you whilst you are at the burial?

or a local bakery shop like Birds

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · Yesterday 17:27

For a seminar once, I bought a load of meal deals and cut the sandwiches into triangles. Got the cakey snack with the meal deal. Added some big bags of crisps, fruit and sausage roll type snacks.

I agree with this.

Failing that do you have a friend who could buy a load of meal deal sandwiches and present them cut in half with some cakes etc. I would do that for a friend no bother

madaboutpurple · Yesterday 17:31

OP, I was so full of getting a solution I forgot to say Sorry for your loss. Surely there is a pub in Peterborough that caters for funerals. My thoughts are with you.

MyDadIsTheGreatest · Yesterday 18:07

Thank you everyone - I would have been panicking a lot more without all these ideas. Smile

I've found someone via Facebook so I'm heaving a huge sigh of relief.

Some larger M&S stores stock platters of sandwiches. You could also buy the regular sandwiches and cut into smaller triangles. The Christmas party food is also in stock now at M&S. You could buy mini bread rolls and tubs of sandwich filling if you have time to make them up. M&S cheese twists are good as are the best ever sausage rolls and mini bite tubs. Good luck!
