Is a year long enough to wait

I have recently been training on clinic (NHS) as part of my job. I am not on my own but I am dreading the thought of being so in the future. The union rep said I won't be on my own as there are HCAs but they will be busy.

If I have to be on my own presumably I will have forewarning but I will start looking at early retirement if that becomes a possibility. I'm doing OK according to my colleagues I have been partnered with this week and I have actually surprised myself by enjoying it and I may become competent but doesn't mean I want to run clinic on my own.

However finding a part-time position with the days and hours I currently do locally is going to be difficult especially as I am edging closer to retirement.

I'm not really sure what you are asking.

Is a year long enough to wait for what ?

What do you mean by 'I have recently been training on clinic' ?

If it is part of your job to 'do clinic' , then why are you thinking you shouldn't have to ?

Is it physically being left alone with patients, or the responsibility of being 'in charge' that is worrying you ?

If you are good at this part of the job, and competent (as you have stated) then why wouldn't you do it if not being supervised? Or perhaps we should ask, why are you training for something you don't feel you have the confidence to do ?

What is the question?

Are you talking about phlebotomy or something? Do you feel that the 12 month training you have had, hasn’t been effective enough? Do you have regular peer support / supervision? Do you feel it’s more a confidence or competence issue?
What is it that worries you about running your own clinic?

Being on clinic is part of my job and as I am new to the role ( only started 12th August) a colleague partners me. However even when I feel competent or they think I am I don't want the responsibility of being on clinic on my own ever. My manager says it will be a while ( how long is a while whom knows)before I am on my own but I don't want to be.

I have never wanted to be in a patient facing role but I needed to carry on working and there wasn't a lot of choice jobs wise under the MOC that weren't patient facing so I didn't have much option.

I am a Pathway Support Coordinator and prepare clinics and have only just started sitting on clinic booking patients in. It's not difficult but the thought of being stuck on clinic on my own and being bombarded with queries about things I have no experience with terrifies me and so I am asking should I wait until I have been in the role a year and actually sat a clinic on my own before starting to look for something else non patient facing.

My husband says only need to put up with it for 2 years but not sure if I will be able to stick it that long before looking at early retirement.

OP stop worrying about things that haven’t happened.

Focus on learning the job as best you can and being competent.

They’ve not given you any indication that this will happen anytime soon and so you’re worrying over nothing.

In a years time you might find you’re confident enough and if not, then speak to them at the time.

You’ve been there a few weeks.
There are no plans to leave you on your own just yet.
Stop making up things to be worried about.
This is literally all in your head.

That’s the job.

A year seems a randomly arbitrary timeline. You have no idea if you’ll be running clinics before that, or if it’d start then, or if you’d never do it; although it is part of your job and it seems it’s been clear that it will be expected from you.

I think if you really don’t want to do it, you should look for something else, but it seems that’ll have been a pretty big waste of time, effort and training on both sides, so perhaps you should give it a go? Almost everything feels worse than it is.

I know although I have been in the role since 12th August but have only been on the clinic rota for the past two weeks.

It's a habit of mine unfortunately worrying about. You may be right.

What does “on clinic” mean? Wait a year for what?

pippa1969 · 01/11/2026 15:14

I know it's expected as part of my job. I did surprise myself by actually enjoying it and the colleagues partnered up with me have said I have done OK. There's so much information to take in though.

It may be some time before I'm on my own however like everywhere staff shortage, sickness and annual leave could mean I might be pushed into being alone before I feel ready however I will have to deal with it when it happens.

It means booking in patients for their appointment etc. By waiting a year I mean persevering and giving the role a fair go before looking for something else
