Nit treatment for mum with long hair that actually works!

My DC class had nits and my DC passed them onto me. He is clear but mine keep coming back. I have done 4 x treatments- 2 of Full Marks mousse and 2 of Hedrin spray, 7 days apart but to no avail. My hair is long and thickish and I never feel they are gone despite using 3 x the recommended treatment amount.

has anyone found one that works for long hair?

You need to comb conditioner through dry hair every day with a nitty gritty. It is a RPITA. Keep going for a few days after they’ve gone. Make sure you section off and do thoroughly root to tip. I had a couple of years of it with my girls and it was awful.

You never feel they have gone or are you actually checking with a comb?

As well as the liquid killer stuff, you need to nit comb with a nitty gritty comb.

Conditioner on dry hair, I did it every other day as that comb will damage the legs of hatchlings and help get the eggs off the hair.

It’s like a 2 hour job 😫😫 Is this the only way?

or comb olive oil through daily with a bit comb ( and then wash). Very moisturising!

NitNot treatment, leave it on for a couple of hours (use a shower cap to stop it getting all over you). By far the most effective treatment we've found.

We're a household with thick, long, curly hair, we tried NittyGritty but it's painful and takes forever.

Happymchappyface · 26/10/2026 07:27

Conditioner comb is the best way.

Combing is the only way, we have wasted time using treatments in the past but never again.

It might be a long job (not 2h surely) but if you do it properly, 2-3 times, 3 days apart, should be enough.

You've done the treatment several times now to no avail, so that's added up to hours by now probably

Hair loaded with conditioner and nitty gritty comb every day for a week. Then maintain twice per week. I had bum length curly hair when my kids were younger and this was the only way to get shot of them.

LoveHearts69 · 26/10/2026 07:40

I eventually dyed my hair with a box dye and that seemed to do the trick!

Combing with conditioner works. You need to do that as well as treatments anyway, so may as well not bother with putting pesticides in your hair.

Gettingbysomehow · 26/10/2026 07:54

Me and my ex husband used to get them off a friends kids. I have waist length hair and my ex husband has thick waist length very curly hair and hedrin worked every time. We would apply it as the instructions, leave it on overnight with a shower cap on then spread an old sheet on the floor apply loads of conditioner and use a nit comb and comb every bit of our heads. Then wash our hair. Nits gone. You have to be really thorough.

Gettingbysomehow · 26/10/2026 07:55

Now my head's itching. Thanks.

HoraceCope · 26/10/2026 07:55

have you tried plaiting your hair

BootstrapTime · 26/10/2026 08:05

Conditioner plus nitty gritty. Fill a sink with water and rinse the comb off there. Sometimes you can't even see them on the comb but you can see them float on the water, or stick on the sides of the sink when it drains. Do it every couple of days for a while until clear, then do again in a week in case any egg is left to start the cycle again. To help kill them you could also use hot straighteners on your hair.

You have to comb it with a nitty gritty comb and conditioner. It’s the only thing that works.
