Ds is at Oxford uni right in the heart of Oxford city centre - the traffic getting out last time was terrible and the press I’ve seen suggests it’s not getting any better.
I’m going to visit him next week driving from the North and so was wondering about either using the park and ride or maybe there’s a train station with easy parking at it or nearby then I can just hop on a train?
When we went to the open day we stayed in Banbury and got the train in which worked well so I could do that again.
again local knowledge / advice would be appreciated
tia

When you say north do you mean north Oxford, or the north of England?

Drive down Woodstock Road to St Giles and pay a fortune to park
Bus from park and ride
Take a bike in your car and cycle in from nearby?

Which college is it, and how far do you feel like walking?

Do you know a builder? Can you borrow his van? Failing that , Park and Ride. There is one near / at Pear tree Roundabout

I thought this thread was going to be looking for application/ interview tips 😆

If Banbury station works then yes, use that again.

You can continue driving to Kidlington and use Parkway rail station or the adjacent P&R.

Oxford is ringed by P&R so choose the one that suits you best.

Botley Road is finally open so that may help but with the traffic filters in force, be careful where you go.

At the end of the day, train or bus is by far the best way to get into the centre.
Oxford has not been traffic friendly for decades but PT is excellent.

Premier Inn at Oxford Airport (Kidlington) then P&R from Peartree. Very easy into the City Centre

So did I 🤣

Also, there is a good value ticket combining parking at the Park and Ride and bus journeys into the city. But if you are staying more than 16 hours you are better off buying Park and rRde and bus tickets separately, I found out in September.

Use the park and ride

So did I and i was wondering if they'd reduced the entry requirements 😁

Also, check the timetable for the Park and ride buses; I have found them to finish surprisingly early in the past, although they may have changed or the better in the last year or so.

How about parking at Bicester village car park (it’s free) and then catch the train to Oxford? Takes 15 min and it’s cheap. Train station should be a short walk from the car parks. You could also park at the train station car park but you pay.

Same. I was like “I don’t think there’s any shortcut to being insanely bright and working very hard”. 😂

Skybluecoat · 24/10/2026 19:02

I would just get the train all the way to be honest.

Another one slightly disappointed you aren’t wanting to know who to shag in order to get your DC into an Oxford College 😊

dijonketchup · 24/10/2026 19:03

Park at Oxford Parkway station, not expensive, and get train in?

Carriemac · 24/10/2026 19:04

When DD was at Oxford the porters allowed us to park in her college :)

Me too. I was going to suggest donating a few million quid. 😁

Getting the car to the college is a nightmare now. Loads of streets are one way or closed except to bus and cycle, and there's a congestion charge too.

Arriving from the north I would park at Oxford Parkway rail station rather than Banbury though.

Yup, that'd do it 😆

The Bicester village people are very aware of this and issue fines if they spot it happening.

Thanks for this- you are right! I just read this on their website. The Bicester train station parking then is an option or Oxford Parkway, as suggested by others.
