So many angry people

Gottodosomething2026 · 24/10/2026 16:26

Is it just me that's noticed an increase in seeing more angry people. I don't necessarily mean extreme anger, more like low level stuff, like people talking to their children or partners like utter shit. If this is out in public, I dread to think what they're like at home. Today I was out for about half an hour and heard a woman growl really angrily at the man with her - he'd only asked what petrol pump they were. About 10 minutes later in the shop a woman was shouting at her children simply for behaving like kids. They weren't doing anything wrong really. I saw her in several shop aisles and she was shouting or barking at them every time.

Is it just me or this becoming more common? I know life is tough but I just think there's no excuse for treating people like shit. I have a lot going on but never shout or snap at people. People can restrain themselves surely.

Tbh I've noticed it as well, and whilst it shouldn't be so I do genuinely think it's because life is so difficult/expensive/worrying atm.

Agree it's tough but it's shitty behaviour to make other people's lives worse because your life sucks.

I have so much going on but I still manage to say please and thank you, smile and not shout at people.

But it doesn't have to. People can control how they behave on the whole.

Yes, I do too, but it is the reason it's happening more.

Yup, and nothing works anymore, trains/buses are late/cancelled/full, "call centres" don't answer your calls, it's nigh on impossible to talk to a GP, shop staff/reception staff are often grumpy and unhelpful and often can't even be bothered to speak when you're buying something just grunts, etc etc. It's become a pleasant surprise when something works, you can get a seat on your bus/train that's on time, a shop assistant speaks, a call centre handler not only answers the phone but actually deals with your problem, etc. It shouldn't be like that.

Roselilly36 · 24/10/2026 16:37

Yes, I always notice this around Christmas time generally so I can only assume it’s stress related. Very difficult times for people, no wonder they are stressed out.

Most jobs are horrendous today too.

Many more people seem unable or unwilling to control it.

Everyone gets promised the moon on a stick online - then some get cross when reality doesn’t live up to the curated, filter, claptrap they have come to believe.

SirChenjins · 24/10/2026 16:42

Definitely. I think our online culture plays a big part - nothing is face to face anymore, everything is via SM, an app, a chatbot, a portal...you can't speak to anyone, no-one cares if stuff goes wrong, and we're losing the art of communication.

They have less control/power in their personal lives, so want a feeling of power over someone even if that is someone working in retail or on the same pavement.

frozendaisy · 24/10/2026 16:44

And the standard of living is declining.

Manners are seen as a weakness.

Boomer55 · 24/10/2026 16:46

As ever, life can be frustrating, but all this anger solves nothing. 🤷‍♀️

No one ever said life would be easy.

“Manners are seen as a weakness.”

Parents are not teaching their children manners. Increasingly, parents are not parenting.

SirChenjins · 24/10/2026 16:49

And there are no consequences. The police services have been cut right back, it seems a good number of those who are left aren't covering themselves in glory, the courts seem intent of letting people off with nothing more than a stern word, and violent prisoners are being let out early. Behaviour isn't controlled and no-one seems to be punished for anything.

Sums it up completely, and really agree that when something goes to plan for a change it is quite literally an oh wow moment for me!

NoteyMcNoteface · 24/10/2026 17:07

No, not really. If you’re looking for something, you’ll find it. Try looking for positive human interactions and they’ll be more apparent. Posts like yours bring out the worst in everyone, maybe you’re part of the problem?

Agree. My dm died in 2024 and the attitude from various financial institutions and other organisations was frankly appalling and this was often on the dedicated bereavement line. I really wanted to ask: could you give even less of a shit about my queries?

It's absolutely possible to look for the positives but acknowledge that people are also getting angrier, and it's helpful to try and understand why that is and what can be done about it. That's not being part pf the problem, that's being part of the solution.

pictoosh · 24/10/2026 17:18

There have always been irritable people with a sense of entitlement and no manners...people who think it's fine to speak to others like crap.
Can't say I've seen a notable increase though.

How does making an observation make me part of the problem? I'm not an angry person so I don't think I'm part of the problem. I also don't take things out on others.

I think professionally some suppliers and shops have started to up their game a bit (from a very low bar admittedly). I have had interactions with the NHS, a chain opticians, a car dealership and several online shops this week and all have been positive and polite experiences. But people seem to want the moon on a stick with their default setting of 'I know my rights' not inclining anyone to go the extra mile. Why should they when all they get is abuse?

I always smile, say please and thank you when in shops/cafes etc., but you rarely get any reciprocation. Likewise I hold doors open for people, smile/nod/say hello to people when I'm out walking. However hard you try, there are lots of people who simply don't give anything back.

It’s not just parents or parenting

It’s everyone who has been influenced online that criticism or even gentle observation is taken as a deep personal insult.

Everyone is injecting themselves with god knows what, Botox, steroids, weight loss, without any trained medical guidance. People desire easy results, and injecting solutions to warp physical appearance. People are fake. Desire fake.

Manners, acceptance, patience are seen as weakness.

It’s a crazy world we live in.
