Would you report shoplifting?

I was doing my weekly shop today in my local discount grocer (e.g., Aldi/Lidl). A man was following me somewhat closely, I thought he was one of the undercover security guards (I was using the self scanner and had many bags in my trolley.) It was a bit uncomfortable but I didn't think too much of it as it was quite crowded. A few mintues later I noticed him stuffing chocolate bars and sweets into his bum bag. I thought about notifying the shop staff but didn't.

I'm curious what other people would do. DH says it's not my business and I'm somewhat inclined to agree (if they are worried about shoplifting they need to sharpen their monitoring). However, in hindsight the fact that he was following me so closely makes me think he may have wanted to pickpocket, which would be something that would affect more people.

What would you do? Do you generally report crimes of a smaller nature?

It’s not your business and the staff would really struggle to do anything about this, the advice is generally not to confront people over stuff like this.

Exshop staff.... if I saw a member of staff I would tell them just incase hes a regular they are looking out for, but if it was only chocolate hes probably not on their watch out for list ! To be honest theres nothing they can do,

Not really no. I'd be more worried the lifter would see I had done so and harass me or hurt me. The staff can't do shit anyway. So what's the point. It's only shoplifting after they've actually left the store anyway. So too late.

A few years ago I saw a man stuff packets of chocolate biscuits down his trousers. I went to security but they just shrugged! The man was still in the store.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone actively shop lifting (have seen scuffles outside with the security guards but never anyone actually pocketing anything) but think I’d probably just mind my business and carry on with my shopping.

Nope.
none of my business.

Freshrain · 24/10/2026 16:30

Going against the grain, but I would.

The more that is stolen from shops, the more the rest of us have to cover the losses in price increases.

DH reported to staff in our lidl because the guy was stuffing his rucksack with sirloin steaks and sides of beef...but I felt sorry for the guys waiting for him in the pub...

Shop staff won’t do anything anyway, police won’t investigate even if they’re called, and if the shoplifter spots you they may get aggressive you.

DH and I have often seen shoplifters in our local shop, but since it’s likely they’re local too (and would be easy to follow us home if they got angry with us) then no I don’t report them.

hotmumshit · 24/10/2026 16:47

I would never

During the pandemic asda made sure their just essentials range wasnt available online so vulnerable people had to spend more whilst shielding

Fuck them.

Mumto3kiddiewinks · 24/10/2026 17:22

Where I work the prolific shoplifters are reported to the police time and time again but the police don't seem to care.
