I'm on Tesco PAYG so when I'm out I've not got access to internet as being on 4G would drain my PAYG balance in seconds. Suppose I ought to get a contract. But I'm rarely out of the home and often there is free WiFi in say shops but there have been occasions I could have done with internet access outside of the home.

I'm old so cut me some slack. Best cheap monthly provider? It's not like I'm streaming music or gaming on my phone

I have been with Tesco mobile pay
Monthly f for years I wont go past them for their their deals. I am sim only £20 a month,

Use moneysavingexpert comparison site to compare SIM only deals for however much data you want, 10-30gb should be ample - look at how much you use currently on PAYG and double it or something Source: Money Saving Expert https://share.google/Il7Lc2H4Tij3crXma

I normally find IDmobile SIM or phone monthly contracts come.out competitive but there atenlaods to choose from these days. All only use one of 4 networks though so us their coverage checkers to make sure they will be good coverage for where you live - if a city/large town all will be fine.

Look around and find one that right for you. Talk to people in phone shops they know their stuff, but don't be talked into something you don't want. I am on ID from Carphone warehouse. I pay £6 a month for unlimited calls and text, can't remember my data allowance but its more than enough. I have never had any problem with ID, I was briefly with O2. I was with Vodafone for years but would never use them again due to their behaviour following my Dads death.

My SIM only deal is £10 month for 30GB - I don't stream movies on 4g but I do freely watch short social media clips and do everything else I want. It's far more than I will ever need. I could get it for a bit cheaper but I can't be bothered switching.

Lambsydaisy · 24/10/2026 13:47

SIM only with 1p mobile, which is £5 a month I think. 5gb data, unlimited texts and calls. more than enough for me.

sunandpeonies · 24/10/2026 13:49

£10 a month with GiffGaff

afaloren · 24/10/2026 14:13

Another vote for Giffgaff.

I have been with Tesco for ages. My current plan is £9 a month with 12Gb of data, unlimited texts and calls. I use my data mainly in the car for streaming the radio and navigation but have also used it occasionally during overnight stays or internet outages at home for streaming films/shows and have never run out.

whoateallthecookies · 24/10/2026 15:03

I'm with 1pmobile, and get an £8 bundle each month - 10 Gb data (which I've never managed to use, even giving DD free access via a hotspot), unlimited calls and texts. No contract, so I can stop/switch whenever I want.

TheHouseofBamboo · 24/10/2026 15:17

I'm far from a techno phone but have never had a phone contract.
I buy a handset and have a Smarty SIM. Mine costs £6 a month for unlimited calls and 4GB of data. That's more than enough, I never used a fraction of it. No contract.

Moohiganny · 24/10/2026 15:45

OP, my mum was on a silly contract that she didn't realise she could leave for free.

I helped her move to Lebara for about £2.50 a month for unlimited calls, texts and about 35GB of data (internet), she uses nowhere near that.

If you own your handset (it's all paid off), definitely just get a SIM that will cover your needs. I would go for maybe 10GB but because they're just a monthly rolling contract, if you need a different plan, you can change easily.

Also check where you get the best coverage for where you live. Lebara is on Vodafone so I know I get good signal with them. Giffgaff uses O2. Smarty uses 3. So it's no good going with Smarty if the coverage for your area is poor with 3.

Hope that makes sense!

I'm with Giff Gaff at £10 per month which comes with plenty of data for me. And I always use free Wi-Fi wherever I can find it.

I'm on the internet ALL the time and have never needed to spend more than that.
