Do you have age-gap friendships?

This post is inspired by another post from a lady who was thinking of going clubbing with a group of women that were half her age. Does anyone have friends who are much younger or much older? I'm 42 and I have friends whose ages range from 27 to 57 (A big age gap but still within a 15 year gap from me).

I have friends from age 18 right to late 50s… I’m 39…

WearyAuldWumman · 24/10/2026 14:37

I'm 66. My oldest friend is in her 80s; my youngest is in her 30s.

Yes. I’m a big fan of age gap friendships. I am
late 50s and am close friends with a 25yo and also have a friend in their 70s and another in their 80s. People in different age brackets have different perspectives, which I like.

DeathBanana · 24/10/2026 14:55

Yes! Two of my favourite people are 32 and 74. I’m late 40s.

Quartzfairy · 24/10/2026 15:12

Yes! I play a sport with women of all ages and socialise with a group aged between 20 and 62 (I’m 48). I have another friend from a different hobby who is 79 (older than my mum!)

Bluelake · 25/10/2026 07:37

I'm 59 and have seven close friends (I have other people I occasionally see who you'd consider to be friends though, those being 55-80). My close friends are aged 42-63. My friend who is 42 is the most recent, we've known eachother for 12 years - our lives are very different (she had a baby five years ago/my DD has already left home, her husband is a millionaire/we're below average income, she's intelligent and very knowledgeable - I'm not) but we just get on really well together.

Castlerigg · 25/10/2026 08:18

I’m 48 and a good friend who is 79. We just get on really well, we’re quite similar. But I also find her inspiring, as she has achieved a lot, and been through a lot, and always gives good advice or an alternative viewpoint.

HappyViewer · 25/10/2026 08:20

I am 57 and my friends are 49 to 67.

saraclara · 25/10/2026 08:24

I love age gap friendships. The one thing that bothers me about being old, is that the future probably involves living in some old person ghetto like a retirement village or care home.

I'm 70. My best friend is 42. We met when I was 53 and they were 25. I deliberately choose activities and voluntary work that bring me into contact with younger people, and avoid anything specifically and exclusively for my age group.

MauveExpert · 25/10/2026 16:17

Yes, a lot of the good friends I've made at this stage in life are older than me. I'm 42 and many of my good friends are in their mid 50s, some in their 60s. We seem to share a similar outlook on life and most haven't had children either.

NoHangoversToday · 25/10/2026 16:21

I'm 52 and I am in a group of good female friends- 9 of us. We do book club, go to the pub, go to the theatre, go on overnight trips to other cities.

I'm the youngest. The next youngest is 61 and the oldest is 85.

coolcahuna · 25/10/2026 16:32

Yes and I love it. I'm 50 and two of my close friends are 15 years older and younger than me. It's great

VeronicaRaven · 25/10/2026 18:35

Kinda. My partner's mum is one of my closest friends, she's almost twice my age. We go on holidays, for meals and to the theatre together, just the two of us.
My other close friend is 10 years younger.

Cobrakainerd · 25/10/2026 18:38

Im 60, two close friends are 36 and 29. My 2 long standing friends are 66 each.
The 36 yr old jokes I'm her second mum.

I have friends who are 15 years younger and 25 years older. I can honestly say I don't notice the age difference.

MCF86 · 25/10/2026 21:48

I spent yesterday with people that range from ten years younger than me to 28 years older

underseige05 · 25/10/2026 22:02

Yep I'm 42 and im close friends with a 60 and 59 yr old

Bufftailed · 25/10/2026 22:27

20 years in both directions

Kickinthenostalgia · 25/10/2026 22:53

I’m 38, have friends aged from 22 - 57, men and women. I’ve lays been one of them women who relate more with male friends than female. I love football, sport and have very dark humour.

Freshrain · 25/10/2026 23:28

Why have you started the same thread twice ?

StarlightLady · 26/10/2026 08:32

I have friends much younger and much older. We learn so much from each other. I think it’s about having similar attitudes. Diversity is one of life’s treasures.
