Check your route. The A312 had huge floods early this morning so I’m guessing a lot of roads will too.

whippersnapper55 · 23/10/2026 11:42

I wouldn't drive that far in a storm - it's going to be pretty rough I think! Is there any way you can put it off til tomorrow?

bettyfloormop · 23/10/2026 11:48

Eugh not really.. I guess if it’s actually dangerous though maybe I should.
waze is telling me 5hrs 15 leaving around 3pm.

Good luck, especially once you get off the A30, we have trees down in some areas and local flooding. It is not as bad as possibly it could be but it is cold and wet atm.

Make sure you have Powerpacks, extra blankets, food and water in the car and wellies to hand

ItsWoudHaveNotWouldOf · 23/10/2026 11:53

My DD is driving from Greater London to Gloucestershire this afternoon. I'm not happy about it but there's no dissuading her. I'm going to ensure she's stocked up on snacks, water and blankets.

CrushingOnRubies · 23/10/2026 11:56

In Cornwall. And the winds have started to die down. It’s more debris and tree falling that might block your route. I think I’d set off this afternoon when there is a gap between the two storms. I know Boleo is further north but still.

as I type the sun is blinding me in the cafe.

namechange62 · 23/10/2026 11:56

And we have another major storm on Saturday so be prepared..

Papyrophile · 23/10/2026 12:04

It's calmer here in Cornwall, but the storm is heading east.

exhausted100 · 23/10/2026 12:11

Are u staying in a holiday park? Several have been closed due to weather. Maybe worth checking if you are. Plenty of trees down, a30 was closed earlier due to a lorry blown over

Bohemond23 · 23/10/2026 12:37

It's pretty shocking weather in Somerset at the moment (we are v close to the M5)

DH has driven through the country lines in Gloucesteshire this morning, no problems. I'm about to head off out driving (I was out walking about an hour ago), I'm not particularly worried as it doesn't seem that bad - it was bad in the night though, I hardly got any sleep.

madaboutpurple · 23/10/2026 12:42

Maybe you would be better to consider going somewhere else.

WildBuilt · 23/10/2026 12:44

It's calming down in Devon, but still very wet and windy.

Pieandchips999 · 23/10/2026 12:48

Don't would be the short answer. We left about 3pm Thursday from Looe as our holiday accommodation was evacuated. It was already starting to get very windy and rainy. Everywhere was shutting down. We had to take a big detour on local roads to get out the area. There's further storms predicted. It really was rough

No I’m staying with a friend who lives quite rurally in north Cornwall. I’m staying till Tuesday.
hoping to leave before 3 this afternoon and going via the A303 rather than attempting the M5

Driving to Cornwall on half term Friday is madness at any time, let alone in a storm.

peckishcats · 23/10/2026 12:54

Driving down to Cornwall on any Friday afternoon is going to be fraught with awkwardness, to be honest.

RaininSummer · 23/10/2026 12:55

The storm has passed from South Devon and I guess Cornwall too now but there may well be trees down in some places.

Aliencrispsandolives · 23/10/2026 12:56

Where in North Cornwall?

The rain has stopped for a bit but the wind is strong. We keep having power cuts.

Lots of roads locally have trees down so you might make it close but not all of the way. I wouldn’t travel in it.

AlphaApple · 23/10/2026 12:59

How solid is your car?

Keep an eye on traffic and weather reports.

Leaver earlier to do as much as possible in daylight.

Stick to safe speeds.

Pack a flask, snacks, blankets, waterproofs and decent walking shoes just in case you get stranded.

Can you contact your friend and see what they think? They must have an idea of how reachable they are.
I'm not at all sure this journey is a good idea. Friend will surely understand you cancelling?
Best of luck though.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 23/10/2026 18:00

Did you go @bettyfloormop ? How's it going?

bettyfloormop · 24/10/2026 00:46

@TemporarilyCantDoMyself I did go! I made it here about 9.15 pm. It wasn’t too bad tbh..a few downpours along the way but generally on the A303 which is well lit and people seemed to be driving sensibly.
it is a bloody long drive though.. 5 and a quarter hours!

Glad you made it in one piece!

bettyfloormop · 24/10/2026 09:53

Thanks! The relentlessness of the A303 is quite something! The only treat is passing stone henge 😊
