How would you split this accomodation cost?

I think I know what I'm going to do, and I don't expect it to be any issue with the rest of the party, just wondering what others would do.

A short break to do a specific thing, chosen by me. I'm going with DP and adult DS2. DP is not his Dad and we don't live together. ETA i.e no combined finances.

There is a double room with ensuite, and a twin with a further bathroom.

I will probably treat DS to his share, but he would pay if I ask him to, although he is in PT low paid work - longish story, but nothing that reflects badly on him, he's using the time to support elderly GPs with gardening and DIY.

The total cost is £300, which won't break any of us.

So split by person, by room, or just between me and DP and let DS have a freebie for the support he gives my parents (which in turn takes a load off me), or I cover the lot because it's my trip and I'm glad they want to come?

If I could afford it, I'd pay for all of the accommodation and split all other costs three ways.

Bubblewrap100 · 22/10/2026 14:45

I think you cover it all. Or 75% you and 25% your DP which seems a bit petty considering it seems to mainly be a trip you want to go on.

PizzaPowder · 22/10/2026 14:46

If you've got the money then just pay for it i think.

Your son and partner can grab dinner/lunch or whatever.

Lastofthesummerwines · 22/10/2026 14:46

Who is driving etc ? Maybe if DP drives you could all go in on me car and he pays the fuel and you pay for the accommodation costs. Then split the food costs 3 ways.

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 22/10/2026 14:47

I'd pay it all.

This, I’d have thought.

We usually take my car because it's more comfortable, and split petrol on long trips. DS hasn't been with us before.

If it is primarily your trip, I would expect to pay. If it is just that you came up with the idea, split into thirds.

It was my idea and it's definitely originated from something I wanted to do, but they're both coming because they want to and they will enjoy it too. I would have been very happy to go alone, but it will be nice to have them along.

Three adults so £100 each.

However, if you’re happy to pay the accomadation costs, then maybe everyone pays £100 each towards petrol and basic food (tea, coffee, bread etc) and then meals out split three ways, or dp and ds each pay for one meal out?

Mcdhotchoc · 22/10/2026 15:49

What do you usually do? If you always split exactly, id do that. Your share is ds plus half your room.

Dp and I would usually split. DS is the added complication.

So I pay 75% and DP saves for the fact DS is joining us. FWIW the accomodation is no more expensive for DS coming. I couldn'tf ind a 2 bed place for any less than this one (I looked because DS is a late addition).

That’s irrelevant the fact it costs no more, you’re wanting to treat your DS so why should your DP go 50/50 on the cost and your DS pay nothing? I’d say considering you’re all adults you pay £200 and your DP pays £100. Then all other costs split between the three of you (unless you also want to pay for your DS food then 65/35 between you and DP)

Ponderingwindow · 22/10/2026 16:05

I don’t really see why a 2/3 to 1/3 split is tripping you up. This isn’t huge sums of money. If you split 50/50 you pay 150, if 66/30 you pay 200. It’s only a difference of 50.

TokyoSushi · 22/10/2026 16:07

Either you pay or DP pays £100, then all other costs are split 3 ways and you choose whether you pay 1/3 or 2/3

Nktes · 22/10/2026 16:08

I'm not "tripped up at all". I intend to pay for the whole thing but wondered if I was being a soft touch.

mondaytosunday · 22/10/2026 16:09

I’d cover it all. Alternatively get you partner to pay £100 but I think that’s petty.

McJibes · 22/10/2026 16:14

I'd expect no more than £75 from partner. He shouldn't subsidise your son by paying half (£150), nor pay a third (£100) as he is sharing a room while your son gets a room to themselves. So that leaves half of a (£150) room, as you are sharing.

Meals should be per person.

crazymommaclub · 22/10/2026 16:33

I would have said to DP that I’d pay 75% as your son is a grown adult (not a child) so either you should pay for hi. Or he should be paying for himself. All other expenses should be split 3 ways.
