As the title what kind of present do you normally take to a classmates birthday party? How much is the norm to spend?

Between £5-10, small Lego set, sometimes books depends what the child is into but I try to keep a stock of emergency present. I quite like the 2 for 12 offer in the works, colour sets, puzzles/jigsaws that sort of thing 😊 also depends on age obviously! I'm talking between 4-8 so appreciate that might not be the right age range!

It depends how old but I am going to assume infant school if this hasn’t come up before. I used to buy in bulk when I saw an offer eg Spiderman figures 3 for 2 – would be about £7 or so. Or mini LEGO sets. I used to spend a max of £10 but this was several years ago so not sure how much that buys now!

If younger DC, Orchard Toys games were good or a book; craft kits were also popular. If in doubt or short of time, £10 in a card is fine IMO.

ETA: Quick google shows Smyths Toys for example with Batman action figures for a tenner. Bet you can get them on an offer somewhere. Just an example.

I spend about £10, but anything I buy is usually discounted so people assume I've spent £20+. I look out for offers on Amazon, Argos and sometimes I've picked up BNWT items on Vinted for things that would cost £30. At younger ages I'd buy craft sets, small Lego sets or small toys like Polly Pocket. For older dcs now they like science kits and stationery.

Between £5-£10 is what I usually spend but now DS is in Year 4 we get less party invites so I just got one for £20 for a close friend.
DD is reception I stuck to the usual £5-10 (£7.50 exactly last night lol)

Something that looks like it cost £10-15, but costs me £5-10 usually. Bulk buy in Argos, Amazon sales. I tend to buy small games, kites, Lego sets, craft sets. Things that are easy to store and aren’t a problem if there are duplicates/extras.

PizzaPowder · 20/10/2026 10:13

Usually just stick £20 in a card.

Depends on the age, under 8 I like to get a little gift around £10 for older I like to give money £10-£20 depending on if it’s a best friend or not. The types of toys I buy depends on what the child likes, if I don’t know I like to get a game or something very gender neutral.

Last two party’s (reception age children) happened to be both girls both on the same weekend. I aim to spend £5-£10 max (including a card)
I got the same for both girls from the works, a make your own bracelet set (£5) and a sticker book (£2) and a card from Sainsbury’s (£1)
Always have a stash of wrapping paper so I don’t include that.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I'm going to have a look for toy and book deals now!

I spend no more than £10 usually including the card and gift bag. I usually try to get a book and some sweets / chocolate. Now DS is getting older he thankfully gets invited to fewer parties and it’s usually his close friends who he knows well. He knew his best friend was collecting football cards for example so I paid a bit extra and got him a big bumper pack.

I've done a bulk order from the Smiggle sale and stashed it away for parties, so they worked out about £7 a present but full price some would have been over £20 :) Also Tesco do cards for £0.25 and £0.50 so I stock up on them as well!!

Jiski · 20/10/2026 20:43

I always pick a £10 book or Works voucher. Then they can go and pick something they like.

EcoCustard · 20/10/2026 20:53

As above I used to purchase some smiggle stationery & note books in the sale & stash for the year. Nowadays with Dc4 I stick £5-10 note in a card. Sick of plastic tat & the same books (I’m weary of it all after many, many parties).
